It matters because the Celtics have spent at least one very long stretch (1986-2007) as a non-contending team. Consistency counts for something. The Lakers have won titles in every decade except the 1990s and 1960s. They've been a contending team in every decade.

The Lakers have 16 NBA titles (1949-50, 52-54, 72, 80, 82, 85, 87, 88, 2000-02, 09,10). They also have the best point guard ever and three of the five best centers in league history.

The Pacers and Jazz are ahead of us and the Pistons, that makes no sense.

Agree with the Lakers at 1, they have less titles, but they have been consistently excellent, while the Celtics were lousy for two decades.

That point system is stupid, just because the Magic had a good season they moved 6 spots, what if the lakers had a horrible season? Do they go all the way down to 7? I could cared less about these rankings

Its ESPN so every Rockets fan can immediately disregard their bias garbage. Everyone knows Jazz have no business above us let alone 10 teams of smaller markets. We all know there are only 3 cities larger than Houston. Clippers happen to make up one of those teams in a larger city also. We have Championships and some above us dont. Certainly none of them have any players better than Hakeem or Moses Malone. We belong in the top 5 or 6 at worst.

The point system is flawed, Championship only worth 30 points while every regular season game worth 1 point each. I think most fans would agree the playoff success is twice greater than the regular season success.

In Hollinger's system the max points you can get from a championship playoff is 30+4*4(four series wins)+4*4*2(playoff game wins)=78

While the points you can get from a successful regular season is about the same. A playoff team usually racks up 50+ wins and usually have 1 or 2 all-stars. That's about 60 points.

Therefore 2 regular season success and 1 deep playoff runs will totally overshadow a championship season, which defies Hollinger's own claim in the championship category:
And last but not least, a relocation penalty of 100 points? that just killed Rockets. I wonder how many people in San Diego remember that once upon time they had a professional basketball team. And in the early days of NBA, when the markets of professional basketball wasn't mature, moving out of a city should be as dramatic as Sonics moving out of Seattle.

With some adjusted points into championship and removing of that stupid relocation penalty, Rockets can be easily top 6.

Ah...I was going by what Hollinger said...

"Celtics fans can point out that Boston has won 17 championships, while the Lakers have 14."

I didn't realize how old this article is (why is that up!?). The Lakers have won 2 more since. Still hate them.
