The kid has recorded 5 first round KOs, and 10 of his 11 victories are KOs. He has also had a mini-classic bout against Guy Robb. That fight against Guy Robb showed that Diaz also has plenty of heart as Robb took him to limit before succumbing to a knockout. You might be hearing a lot about this kid next year.
This guy is better: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omar_Henry_(boxer) Plus I went to high school with him.
I have an honest question. Where do you hear about up and coming boxers? An insider-type website? Something like Ring Magazine or similar publications? Going to local boxing cards? It probably sounds like I'm being a sarcastic ass, but I'm honestly curious. I'm a casual fan of boxing and I would love to be able to have a good idea of who the fighters of the future are before they become household names in the boxing community.
There are several good ways to educate yourself about up and coming boxers. In the case of Joel Diaz, I saw him fight on an undercard against Guy Robb, another good up and coming fighter. Another place, showtime's showbox, which is a boxing series that showcases up and coming fighters. Showbox cards are always on friday nights. The preeminent boxing website is probably east side boxing.com. There, you can find up and coming boxers. Also, pay attention to the ppv cards that aren't showtime or hbo. These cards usually have young fighters pitted against one another with one MAIN attraction, and they cost like 24.99. It is a good opportunity to see some good boxing.
