As many of you know, the Texans first choice for the draft was Aldon Smith and the 49ers took him ahead of us and we ended up with JJ. The question is would you rather have Aldon? Don't get me wrong, JJ has been a monster and Im glad he's a Texan, but Aldon Smith is straight beasting in San Fran. Part of me says Watt is the better choice, because of all our talent in the LB core, but then again if we had Smith, maybe Mario plays end opposite of Antonio? All so we wouldnt have Brooks Reed if we had Aldon Either way, I love me some JJ! Spoiler No homo.
If Texans had drafted Smith they wouldn't hesitate a second to draft Brooks Reed in the second round. If a team likes a player rather then someone that is avalible for a position of need they usually draft the player they like more. LASTLY, YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY PASS RUSHERS!!!
I remember hearing smith would have been the choice had he been on the board. I do think it's harder to find a beast of a DE in a 3-4 as opposed to an outside pass rusher
I recall such talk as well. If I remember correctly he was the number one choice for the Texans FO. Regardless, the good news here is that our talent evaluators got it right twice (with both Smith and Watt), which is a hopeful sign of things to come.
JJ Watt, all day. High motor, high character guy who makes everyone around him better. I can't think of too many 3-4 DE I would trade him for.
Watt. Sack specialist LBs* can be overrated in their importance. Look at how Clay Matthews went from DPOY to crickets. Look at how Suh almost single handily turned the Lions D into heavy weights when he arrived. Watt effects so many plays disrupting the line and never gets the credit for it. No stat for it. Games are won and lost on the line. Just how I value players. Love love love true franchise linemen on both sides of the ball. *not including Ware here - he's simply a beast, and that goes beyond the sacks.
Watt,...because I think it is harder to find attack/impact 3-4 DE with constant energy. It is easier to find attack/impact OLB with energy.
Actually, Watt is generally considered a better player. I was actually google searching "Watt vs Aldon Smith" and this thread came up after I was reading different articles. I haven't found one yet that said Aldon was better at this point. http://nesn.com/2012/12/aldon-smith...tention-but-not-defensive-player-of-the-year/
Aldon is a very good player, but Watt is literally changing the history for the DE position. There are comparisons for him with Bruce Smith. Same with Von Miller, he's a great player, and any other year he would probably win DPOY, but what Watt has done this year with everything combined... there's just no way you can give DPOY to anyone else. Dominant.
Can somebody inform me how Von Miller is redifining the OLB position? I am not connecting the dots on that one.
Smith is an elite pro bowl pass rusher but Watt is just special. He rushes the pass very well like Smith, but he is a force against the run, deflects an insane amount of passes and has a flare for making huge plays at crucial times. If Watt stays health there is a good chance he will be in the Hall of Fame. Very few defensive players have played at the level he is playing.
Watt does EVERYTHING. Stops the runs, bat down passes, & get sacks. Guy is carrying our defense. Without JJ Watt our Defense would be a laughing stock.
It's not even close, smith is almost purely a pass rusher. A great pass rusher, but he is average to bad against the run
