I consider myself pretty athletic and just did 42 inches, JJ is a freak of nature to be able to get almost a foot and a half more than me at his size.
Yeah, not quite sure where you guys are coming up with this "lots of people can do it" nonsense. Maybe 1% of the population pulls that off, and Im being generous. The real number is much smaller than that.
I was measuring up my cubicle wall at work last week thinking how impossible it would be to jump up on it
that spotter though.. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>You'll never know what you're truly capable of unless you push yourself to the limits. 5'1" fail. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SpotterStruggles?src=hash">#SpotterStruggles</a> <a href="http://t.co/1eM712WBMI">pic.twitter.com/1eM712WBMI</a></p>— JJ Watt (@JJWatt) <a href="https://twitter.com/JJWatt/status/577955781842202626">March 17, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
You'll also never break your wrist or hurt your knee by falling off a 5'1" box if YOU STOP TRYING TO JUMP ON A 5'1" BOX. C'mon, man.
I think his box jump is impressive but the massive risk vs the very small reward of doing that exercise is completely not worth it.
Yeah, I think I'm cool with JJ training however the hell he wants to. Because it's obviously working.
That's a fine position to take and you're right in the sense that the end result is fantastic. That doesn't mean that you don't reevaluate his programming and take out what isn't necessary. Do you really believe box jumps are the secret to his success or even likely to be any percent of his success? I'd say no. The question should be asked, What is the training effect that we are trying to accomplish with the box jump and is there another way to accomplish that? JJ Watt is one of the most gifted athletes in the world and the work he's put in has been phenomenal but that doesn't mean everything he's done is absolutely necessary for the end result. The 80/20 rule is certainly applicable in the gym setting.
Definitely. If this is what JJ Watt likes to do to get pumped up and he feels like it makes for a better workout then what can you say?
