Clearly holic was closer to right than you. Now suddenly it's not about what Reddick actually says? It is no longer a 1 or 2 year deal.

You were wrong. And Reddick was here to clear it up for you. Lol, now go apologize to holic.

I think this is absolutely right. Morey wanted the shorter deal and less money - and he was playing hardball because he knew this was the most desirable location for Reddick since he lives in Austin and it's a 30 minute flight home for him. I think Reddick looked at the options, decided on one last payday from the 76ers and he will come to Houston next year. Houston and San Antonio are really the only options for him to play meaningful games at his age and they both happen to be close to home...and I haven't heard any Spurs interest in him - plus I think Houston is more suited to his strengths anyway.

i'm not considering packaging ego for melo. i actually have been posting for weeks that the longer the knicks wait the less leverage they have. of course, morey's first option would be to give nothing and get something... i can't argue that he'd prefer to move ryno for melo instead of including ego. the thing is, why create a logjam in the backcourt by signing jj? there's no reason to go after him when you have ego. there's no reason to move ego for a role player just to sign jj, when you can keep ego and sign tucker and have less roster turnover.

so there was something morey had in mind for ego when going after jj... and since jj was the first option for the MLE, i called whatever imaginary situation morey had in mind for ego option A. however, that doesn't mean option A is automatically better or preferable to newer situations that arise as things change. more accurately i might call the above, off-season plan 1.0. morey missed out on jj, which made ego tougher to part with. the knicks get hit with melo saying he only wants the rockets, and suddenly option B or off-season plan 2.0 takes shape with us having more leverage to work with, and offering less (ryno+pick) because we have less to offer (ego off the table). which of course the knicks have yet to accept.

the reason jj might have been the first option was because he would've allowed us to split ego into 2 assets. one coming back to houston, and the other to help facilitate a trade for melo by either being sent to the knicks, or to a third team as incentive to swallow ryno's contract. whereas missing out on jj means that we dont have enough to get melo, at least right now.

i think the first plan was our best chance at getting melo and the best group of additions to the roster: jj/role player/melo. settling for ego/tucker/ryno is where we're at... but trying to throw the hail mary (ryno+pick for melo) would be a greater outcome than any other.

yeah i agree here. we would've had enough assets to get a melo deal done if we included ego and split his value into something coming back and something going out. signing jj would've allowed that to happen and we'd have our big 3 already, while getting fair value in return for our guys. i think that's why jj was the first target. missing on him means we don't want to part with ego. which means we may not have enough to land melo unless its a total steal (ryno+pick for melo).

Uh, sorry. I never claimed anything. Due to CBA rules, the Rockets cannot pay more than MLE. Thus, I never claimed anything other than explaining Redick can't get a bigger deal than PJ Tucker got. I also did the math to show that a 3yr version of Tucker's deal is a little more than what Philly paid. A 4th year is about 11-12 million more. That's just math.

Do you understand what an MLE is?

The only other thing I pointed out was to listen to the entirety of the two different, hour-long Redick interviews and his 20-minute documentary of his free agency. That's more talk of what happened in a player's negotiations than I think I've ever heard before. It's pretty cool stuff. And he talks a lot about the final day or two, and MDA's final phone call. He only talks about direct signings with multiple teams ... like 5 of them. There is no SnT talk. I'm not claiming anything by saying that...it's just fact of listening to the interviews.

    Have you listened to them?

Clearly he thought he was just another Morey asset and not a cornerstone to this team. And by all indications, he's probably right.

Smoothie...in my first post to you, I wrote my interpretation of your Option A and B. You made no correction. You seem to now agree that Morey would not do that Ryno+Ego for Melo trade and would have to get a Tucker quality player back for Gordon. If so, then we agreed the whole time.

The one scenario you aren't considering is Morey believing that with Redick on board, he can actually get a better player than Tucker by trading EGo, and still getting Melo for Ryno and NG bros. Or there is some scenario where EGo is moved for Melo and Ryno stays....since Ryno is "so hard to move." The NG Bros become even more necessary in an EGo for Melo salary match. Why can't those two Options be Morey's EGo plans, too?

I don't care about not having reddick, other than his presence on the roster may have made others more expendable, thus a melo deal could have been more easily facilitated.

On the other hand, I think the same is still true with the additions of luc and tucker.

Kind of interesting that the Rockets were about to have the starting PG, SG and SF of the 2016-17 LA Clippers, a 51-win team-- and two of these guys were gonna come off the bench for the Rockets.

Where would Redick play? 35 min Harden (PG/SG) 28-30 min CP3 (PG), Gordon 25-30 min (PG/SG/SF). Redick is at best a 20 min/game player on this squad, we just have too many good guys at SF to move Harden or Gordon to the 3 for any reasonable stretch of time. Unless the idea was to dump Gordon which makes no sense, this seems like a pretty bad acquisition for the money.

Reddick at linebacker or left wing. Take your pick. It makes sense if you just make it make sense, by making it.

they could've. i'm not so sure we've been disagreeing. i agreed with you about morey rightfully not willing to include ego right now. i just thuoght, and still do, that signing jj meant gordon was involved somehow in the first iteration of a melo trade. the NG bros seem to be going to waste too which means its possible that it was once thought they'd be needed. so ego+NG bros for melo makes a lot of sense if we sign jj.

i think missing on jj meant a second iteration of a melo trade was needed. we were then not willing to part with ego. went on to signing our second option tucker... and had to lower our offer for melo to ryno+FRP. that would actually be better for the rockets, but less likely to happen.

another thing to consider is that ego + the NG bros were meant for a millsap S&T and ryno+FRP was always the offer for melo. there are too many variables for us to consider all of them without morey telling us his plans himself. i think we've been saying the same thing but getting confused over me labeling the first plan option A. i didn't mean for that to sound like that was morey's best plan, or that he'd prefer to give more then instead of less now. it might have been his best option at the time, but as things change it looks like the knicks lost leverage and we might get melo for less. however, it also looks like we might not get melo at all.

so its tough to say which outcome is better until we see what happens with melo. if we dont get melo, maybe the first plan was the better one after all. if we get melo for ryno, then maybe things turned out better than expected.

Elite shooter, under-rated defender. I've been wanting him on our squad for a decade. He's getting up there in years... This coming season will be pivotal for him. Perhaps we'll be able to snag him on a 3-year deal next year-- if we want to do so; let's see how he does in Philly. Perhaps, in another year, he'll be willing to transition to a backup role on a contending, veteran team. My worst fear: Philly gels, wins it all, and signs Redick to the end of his career.

JJ mentioned in the interview that one of his Clippers teammates is friends with a ton of people, including superstars, in the league and would receive dozens of recruiting calls when he becomes a free agent. I wonder which player JJ is talking about.

that would likely be deandre jordan obviously. not really hard to figure that out. but a team would be incredibly dumb to break the bank for him

I'm glad we don't have JJ. Doesn't shore up our main weakness which was perimeter defense (you sign JJ you're not signing Tucker).

Plus, never in the past twenty years have I seen a Dukie get underpaid. In fact you go down the list and they've been some of the worst contracts ever doled out. Carlos Boozer, Elton Brand, Shane Battier ("no stats all-star was all marketing"), Luol Deng, Chris Duhon, Shelden Williams, Mike Dunleavy, Josh McRoberts, the Plumli, Austin Rivers (ugh). I'm not anti-Duke, I'm an alumnus!

But I'm also a Rockets fan, and great teams do not sign Dukies to unrestricted FA contracts.

JJ would have been the PERFECT specialist in MDA system. His ability to shoot off picks is incredible and he also becomes injury protection if one of the guards gets hurt. Hopefully, we get him next year on a smaller contract, that would be excellent.
