    I'd make it 10 years for a 4-4 game.

Statistics are a lot more revered in baseball than they are in other sports. Personally, I don't give more credit to baseball players for their numbers than football and basketball players. I know that winning in baseball is based more on pure math than any other sport, but it doesn't mean that the players themselves should be treated better than players in other sports when they reach arbitrary numerical milestones.

Would rather have Minka than a hit.

One thing people forget about Jeter is that until last year, people were talking about Jeter making a run at 4000 hits. When Biggio got his 3000th hit he'd been in a decline since 2002. (had a couple of bounce back years but really, watching it you saw his age) 2 years ago Jeter finished 3rd in the MVP vote. It had been a decade since Biggio had finished top 5 by the time he got to 3000.

I think the problem is that in baseball stats are more "pure" (lol steroids) in that there isn't a lot of context to them.

Guy who scores 20 points in basketball per season; was he on a terrible team that just ran plays through him? Was he really inefficient but chucking shots? Was he a guard? Was he a center? What rules did he get to play with? It's just so hard to sort through the context on a lot of stats in both basketball and football because there are so many variables. In baseball there aren't as many.

Jeter has 3,000 baseball hits and is probably on pace to "hit that" 3,000 times.

Some guys just have all the luck.

    Ichiro is at 2343, currently.

657 hits away from 3000 at 37, he's having a down year or declining year. His batting average went up 23 points in the last 3 weeks, but he's still hitting a career worst.

If he doesn't get injured he should finish around 190-200. leaving him at 557-567.

He could make it if he hit around 185 - 190 for the next 3 seasons. I'm on the fence about that.

If he does he would have essentially done it, while coming into the league as an older player (27).

A-Rod definitely, maybe Chipper. Damon has a fair shot at it.

Jeter now 5 for 5 with a double, a homerun and three singles and just singled in the go ahead run in the bottom of the 8th.

    Legend.

True, baseball is the only team sport where individuals have complete control over their statistics. But look at the NBA all time scoring list. All of these players are undeniably great until you go down to #35 (Vince Carter, Mitch Richmond, Tom Chambers...good players, wouldn't say great). It's not like there are guys in there that make you shake your head thinking that they were ball hogs.

Damon's going to do it. He's going to hang around until he gets there because he wants it bad. He'll McGriff it and play with whoever will pay him until he gets the number. (McGriff, sadly, failed to make a team out of ST and then got blackballed and couldn't get those last 7)

Damon will be an interesting case. What will the HOF do when Damon comes up for vote with 3000 hits? Nobody felt like Damon was a HOF at any point in his career.

That's the danger of making proclamations about certain milestones being automatic bids to the hall of fame. It heavily favors longevity over greatness ,and as we've seen with home runs and pitcher wins, the significance of numerical marks can change drastically from generation to generation.

No you are correct, none of them deserve their numbers reduced, but the fact that statistics are so "non-individual" in the other sports hurts how we view them. In baseball statistics are in the control of the player and because of it they mean so much. It's also because we have 100 years of history to put it all in context with as well.

Home run for his 3,000th hit, 5-5 with the game winning hit in a one run game. That's pretty legend right there.

I really hope Ichiro gets 3000 hits, I mean for someone who might possibly be the greatest hitter of all time he doesn't get much love from the media because he is Japanese and plays in West coast.

Would love to see what the media will be like if he nears 3000 in the majors.
