Lin is a better SG than PG TBH.

He shouldn't be handling the ball and "distributing"

Jeremy Lin just shot 15 threes last game, and tied the Rockets' all time franchise record with 9 makes in a game.

I think this thread can die a quiet and slow death now.

As I always tell shooters - KEEP SHOOTING

Only way for Lin to continue to get better at shooting(any mid to long range) is to keep shootin'. Confidence makes or breaks players. I've seen players go a long stretch of poor shooting because their confidence is shaken. kyrie irving is having a shooting slump. i've seen 48% fg shooter drop below 40%.

I think Lin could be one of those streaky shooters(i hope not). Right now he is hot. But when he goes 5-18 then what? i'll tell him keep shooting.

just give me at least 6 long bombs minimum per game. 3pt shooting is critical in today's NBA. Lin must continue to be our deadily 3pt shooter to keep defense honest.

I'm back again, and I'm here to argue that Jeremy Lin could fix alot of his own issues, if only he'd be willing to shoot the ball. This mostly has to do with 3pt attempts, because that's a strength and every time you shoot a 3pter, you can't turn the ball over.

Let's examine Jeremy Lin's 3pt shooting game along with his overall field goal attempts vs the Mavericks.

Jeremy had 5 field goal attempts in 17 minutes, and three 3pt attempts. He shot 0/5 overall, and 0/3 from 3pt.

    Play by play here.
    http://espn.go.com/nba/playbyplay?gameId=400489045&period=0

From the PBP, we can examine his FGAs.

This is his first 3PA. It's shot 21 seconds after Dirk turns the ball over. So that's 3 seconds left on the Rockets shot clock. This is essentially a must shoot situation.

This is his second 3PA. It's with 31 seconds left in the quarter, which for you novices, is a classic 2-for-1 situation. You shoot with approximately 30 to 32 seconds left, so the other team gets the ball, where they can burn at most 24 seconds, leaving your team with another 6 to 8 seconds to get a final possession. So again, Jeremy made no decision to shoot this three. It was another must shoot situation.

This seems to be Lin's first decision to attempt a shot.

This is not a 3PA, but it's a 20ft shot, so it's pretty close. There's 0 seoncds left in the quarter, so a third long jumper, which Jeremy shot only because he must do so.

19 seconds have passed, so there's 5 seconds left on the shot clock. This is pretty much another must shoot situation, unless there's an obvious pass leading to a layup.

So there you have it. Jeremy took 4 long jumpers, all of which were not decisions that he chose to shoot, but were due to game situation. Jeremy literally does not look for his own shot. Despite getting these must shoot 3pters, he's still a 40% 3pt shooter. Even if Jeremy played 34 minutes, he was on pace for only 10 shot attempts. That's absurd, and it's on him.

By not looking to attack from the 3pt line, he's doing himself, his team, and even his rabid LOFs a disservice. I understand that a smarter coach would demand Lin look for his shot more, but within the game flow, this is ultimately in the hands of a player.

Lin literally passes up many opportunities to not shoot 3pters, unless it's extremely obvious he should. I'm not sure if it's because he has a low BBIQ, thinks of himself as a pass first PG, or has no cajones, but it's annoying.

I've already explained why it's correct for him to shoot more 3s (this is fundamental info, but I know alot of you are newbs), so reread from the beginning to now, if you incorrectly think that he should pass the ball to Howard for a post up or run some offensive set (lol, like the Rockets have an offense).

Let me explain the 3pt shots that Jeremy needs to add to his attack, so you guys can recognize what shots he's passing up.

    1) the transition 3pter
Jeremy will correctly pass to an open guy for 3 in transition. However, it's almost like he never considers himself as a 3pt shooter. Imagine if Steve Novak were dribbling the ball up the court on a possession, and there was no defender close or a lazy defender sagging. Then Novak should shoot that 3pt shot. That's a great shot. You run a whole offense, with your star getting doubled, then swing the ball around, hopefully to get Novak that open 3pt shot. It's because Novak is a 40% 3pt shooting.

Well, so it Jeremy. You're wide open Jeremy, pull up and shoot it. The only time I can recall Jeremy doing this is when it's absolutely clear he must. Like the OT of the Philly game, and the Rockets are desperate to score, Jeremy pulled up a jacked up a long 3pt shot. He should be always be looking to take those anyways. As a 40% 3pt shooter, you should look for this shot every time you bring the ball up.

    2) the long 3pter
This can be done in transition or in a halfcourt set. For 40% 3pt shooters, shooting from 26 or 27ft is often still be a good shot, and something every good 3pt shooter should always look for. You can be set and the defense often doesn't expect it. It absolutely freaks the defenders out that you have that range, forcing the defense to stretch uncomfortably.

You see Steph and Klay (the Splash Brothers) do this. They'll just let it fly from 27 ft. Why not? It's better than dribbling in and trying to shoot a midrange shot. Since they'll hit both shot at about 35-40%, why not get that extra point and force defenders to stretch out. It'll open up driving opportunities in the future, and also stretch out defenders when do a pick and roll.

    3) pick and roll (PNR) 3pter
Imagine if a player who could drive, pass, and shoot off a PNR would decide to never shoot off that PNR. It'd be pretty stupid right? Well, that's Jeremy Lin. He never looks to shoot off the PNR, even though it's probably the best option the majority of the time. Yeah, instead of making it easier for the defense by eliminating one of the three options (and often the best one), I think Jeremy should look to add that to his game.

    4) step back 3pter
OK, I've never seen Jeremy shoot this, so I'm not sure he can. But Curry and Love both have this in their game. Where they're a few feet inside the 3pt line with their back to basket and defender, but then they'll take a dribble step back that positions them behind the 3pt line, and they'll shoot the 3pt shot. It's obvious they've both practiced this, and they both understand how valuable the 3pt shot is. It's perfect footwork, and it's also the sign of really smart players to have this in their arsenal. This is something Jeremy doesn't seem to even understand, so he doesn't have in his game. I mean he's not even doing 1 thru 3, so I doubt he'll do this any time this season.

    5) catch and shoot
Finally, we get to something that Jeremy actually does, even if it's the only thing he does. Almost all of his threes, which aren't time pressure/shot clock winding down ones, are of this variety. However, he still passes up alot of these. At least 2 or 3 a game. He'll often swing a pass that has no purpose, dribble out for who knows what, dribble attack into a defender who's already backed off of him (a sign he should've attempted the 3pt shot), of just hold the ball until the defense is up on him.

This is maddening, because it's clear that he could shoot alot more of these. It shows that when he doesn't have the ball, he doesn't think that the moment he gets the ball behind the 3pt line that he needs to jack up a shot. He'll only shoot in when defenders are 8ft off of him. He actually makes it easier for the defense. Another sign of his low BBIQ and passivitiy.

So there you have it. Although he's taken a few more shots than before, Jeremy Lin still doesn't really get it. SHOOT THE BALL. ALOT. He should be trying to take one 3pt shot approximately every 2 to 3 minutes of gametime on average. That's how he can most help the team.

You aren't going to win this one anymore. Lin is clearly on a short leash - if he doesn't make his first few shots then he's not going to play. That being the case, he's far better off driving to the rim, because that's a higher-percentage shot and he might get the foul (so even if he misses it's "OK" and McHale won't pull him).

Unless you want to get mad at him for not getting any playing time because he missed his first 3 shots, but he's the team's most efficient scorer so it's his fault for missing those shots and not helping the team. Or something.

Only thing I will agree with you here is that he should shoot the ball. A lot. He shouldn't really give a damn if his teammates are on fire with their shots and that he is giving the ball to the hotter hand.

I mean, if the coach is only going to give him 16 minutes a game for giving up shots to teammates who have been making them all night, then he (Lin) has been clearly playing this game the wrong way.

He should take a shot every 2 or 3 possessions. Because he will get benched if he takes less. And if everyone is going to play point guard, and encroach on his duties, then he should play a lot more selfishly and encroach on their shot opportunities.

And on a serious note, this thread had a really good jinx effect on Jeremy's 3 point shooting percentage after all.

    I agree.

It does seem to me that everybody wants to run the point except D12.

That's partially why we are the highest TO team right now.

This is why this team needs a new coach. McHale is weak. If you seeing Parson or Casspi going 1 on 3 coast to coast and lost the ball on the way there, Houston, we really have a problem.

Pretty all player here just care about his or own stats.

Worst abuser is Harden. If you are going to make a move, make a move. There is really no point holding the ball 18 to 20 seconds and then throw the ball to another player. Great if they made it, you get an assist (now you see why his assist is high), if they didn't make it, it go against them.

i completely agree with OP's analysis. jeremy defers WAY too much. he should shoot the three. although he is not quite the shooter novak is, the point is well taken. 40% 3 point shooters should shoot every single time they are open. they should be running through screens (oh imagine that! off ball screens to get a shooter open instead of pure ISOs and kick outs). they should be launching 3s in transition and off PnRs. absolutely correct. jeremy needs to be more selfish more than any other player on this team. his team NEEDS him to be. ESPECIALLY since he's the 6 man.

He most definitely has a green light as far as shooting 3's. Only wing player who doesn't, is probably Brewer.

Including the first half of this Wolves game, Jeremy is 3/17 on threes. That's only 17 attempts in 9 halves of basketball. About 4 attempts a game.

But a high percentage of Jeremy's 3pt attempts are rushed ones with shot clock running down. He needs to shoot more of them, earlier in the shot clock, when he's open.

Aaron Brooks has taken 5 attempts already in 13 minutes. That's because he doesn't pass up open shots. He quickly recognizes he has the time to shoot, and he shoots. Jeremy needs to do this also.

He should've taken his 17 attempts in 1.5 games or 2 games max. But it's stretched out over 4.5 games, and it makes him seem cold so far.

Yea, but if he shoots cold Mchale will just pull him. "Jeremy, we are trying to win a game here." He doesnt have the open light, when he's on fire Mchale can't say to stop. He wont let Lin play through mistakes like other players, I'm not surprised his cold shooting is from a low number of attempts per games. He can't keep shooting until he warms up if he isn't already hot.

It's not regression. It was good shooting combined with a hot streak. He's definitely going to be better than he was last season.
