AUSTIN — J’Covan Brown, the Texas guard who led the Big 12 in scoring as a junior, will forgo his final season of college eligibility and enter the NBA draft, he said in a statement released by UT on Monday.

Brown, from Port Arthur, averaged 20.1 points and 3.8 assists per game for the Longhorns last season. After UT lost its first game of the NCAA tournament, Brown made it clear he was leaning heavily toward turning pro, saying, “At the end of the day, I have a family to take care of.” He has a 1-year-old daughter, Jordyn.

The 6-foot-1 Brown is not projected to be a sure-fire first-round draft pick, but will be able to spend the next 2 1/2 months working out for NBA teams to improve his stock. He is considered short for a pro shooting guard, his natural position, and played limited minutes at the point at UT.

With Brown gone, all six returning scholarship players for the Longhorns next season will be sophomores. UT also has another highly rated recruiting class, led by committed-but-still-unsigned Fort Bend Bush center Cameron Ridley.

I think this is a bad choice. He could definitely use a senior year and polish a game. 2nd rounder if he's even drafted.

Definitely don't expect him to do much in the NBA. Not sure if staying another year would help. He may as well give it a try now.

He's a homeless man's Ben Gordon. He'll rot in the D-League for a year or two, and then take his talents overseas.
