I'm currently pouring through CDNOW, and am calling on all Music/Jazz/Hip Hop fans to list their favorite artists &/or album (all time or current).

    Me First:

Jazz: Charles Mingus "Mingus,Mingus,Mingus,Mingus, Mingus" (Most beautiful stand-up bass ever)

Hip Hop: Tribe Called Quest "Low End Theory", (simply classic, affirmed genre' as music)(Also I'm diggin' the new De La album and Jurrasic 5's "Quality Control")

    Your turn...

I love jazz. I'm a drummer, so my collection is largely drummers.

    Buddy Rich
Louie Bellson - met him, the nicest man ever
    Tony Williams
    Shelly Manne
    Art Blakey

    Non-Drummers
    Pat Metheny
    B.B. King (I know, he's a blues artist)
    Jonny Lang (I know, blues)
    Michael Brecker
Miles Davis (Kind Of Blue -- greatest album EVER)
    McCoy Tyner

The list could go on and on (can you tell I'm a music major with an emphasis in jazz? [IMG] ).

It's kinda funny how everyone says Kind of Blue is the best jazz album ever. I really really like Blue but I think both Coltrane and Mingus had better albums. "Crescent", by Coltrane is fantastic and Mingus' "The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady" is my favorite album ever. Sometimes I really think people jump on the Kind of Blue bandwagon because if you say it's not the best then people might think you don't know anything about jazz.

Nuggets4, check Crescent and Black Saint out sometime if you are not familier with those albums. I am pretty confident you will love them. Especially check out The Drum Thing from Crescent. Elvin Jones goes crazy on the drums. [IMG]

Dylan, heard 'em and they're great. I just can't say they're better than Kind Of Blue.

Also, when it comes to singers, you have to love Diana Krall. That voice. Wow.

The Roots are cool. At least they're a hip hop group that actually plays their own instruments.

Close. Greeley, Colorado where I'm going to college. It's roughly one hour from Denver. Close enough for comfort, far enough, well, so I can see most games without them being blacked out. :)

    Texas Salsa--

You like "And Then There Was X" but you think that some of 2Pac's songs are not that good?

You're sure hearing something I'm not... [IMG]

IMHO, that album was a lot worse than his first two. And none of them can measure up to All Eyez on Me.

Pat Metheny is great! I saw him live once. If I wouldn't have seen it, I wouldn't have believed it was humanly possible to play a guitar like that. That man is one with his instrument. Diana Krall is from Vancouver Island, from Naniamo, I believe. She's probably a Grizzlies fan. [IMG] Here's a funny quote from a page I just found.

Diana recalls auditioning for her first gig at a local restaurant called the NHL, "I think it is very fitting for a Canadian Jazz artist's first gig to be in a very nice hockey bar."

There are some contrasting images for you. http://www.dkrall.com/index2.html

Sorry for the delay, i missed you question at first...

The two coltrane albums I recommend to listeners unfamilier with his work are "My Favorite Things" and "Crescent". Coltrane recorded almost all of his albums with two labels: Atlantic and Impulse. Atlantic was his more mainstream label while Impulse was where he experimented with new harmonic structures and his "sheets of sound" approach.

My Favorite Things is probably Coltrane's most listenable album that doesn't get too far out. That album is on the Atlantic label and was intended to be a stepping stone into more experimental jazz.

Crescent is on the Impulse label (like the more famous A Love Supreme) but is also relatively accessable. The melodic structures on Crescent are all exquisite. This is the album that I listen to when going to sleep more often than not. It is more laid-back than A Love Supreme and I think is Coltrane's most underrated album. Try to find some samples on mp3 or something to see if you want to buy the album.

cson, I forgot to ask what are your favorite Mingus albums? I only have Blues and Roots, Black Saint, Mingus Ah Um, and Mingus Dynasty. I really really want to get some of his live concerts such as the Antibes and Carnegie Hall performances.

    Salsa--

I didn't mean to suggest that you SAID All Eyez was a bad album...sorry. [IMG]

I was just saying that IMHO, It's Dark... and Flesh of my Flesh were both better albums than And Then There Was X. I like DMX, but IMHO, he jocked Pac's style big time, and, to be perfectly blunt, I think he needs to get his barking A$$ back to the studio and start making albums like his first one. Personally, I don't like the last album, with the exception of "Why do Good Girls Like Bad Guys" "What these ******* want" and "Party Up."

Didn't mean to offend...I don't need ANOTHER Coach Sampson thread... [IMG]

Nuggets4, I have a box set of Miles Davis, Tony Williams is on quite a few of the tracks. It is by far, the best drumming I have ever heard. I am a guitarist, so I know a little bit about music.

Also Miles "Kind Of Blue" is my favorite jazz album/CD.

Little known band from san fransisco, T.J.Kirk, is worth checking out. They play covers of T.Monk, James Brown and Roland Kirk. Good stuff.

Which box set is this? At first I thought it was the Coltrane/Davis box set, but Williams didn't play with them during that era (hell, I believe he was 10 then!).
