During thing morning show on Sports radio 610 (with John & Lance) I overhead Lance saying that Jason Hirsh will be making his major league debut this Saturday against the Pads. Did anybody hear this? I could not find it anywhere on Astros.com or our RoundRock's website. It looks like his scheduled start would have fallen in Monday (08/07) but he did not start that game. He could start on Tuesday (08/08). If this is old news, I tender my apologies.
He is pitching tonight at RR, I think, and his next start would be Saturday...I think he will get the call. DD
on 610 they said if the Astros dont start Hirsh the Astros gave up on this season. I dont think they will start him but i wouldnt say they basically gave up on the season.
letting hirsch play is a great idea. i heard that "they give up on the season if they start hirsch"... thats bogus. when do u give up when you start a 23 or 24 year old pitcher. plus, havn't we been dealing with a bunch of young pitchers in our rotation all year? Great Idea to start Hirsch. He needs the experience
If Hirsh starts tonight & goes more than a couple of innings, he's out for Saturday. Albers can't be brought back for Saturday (hasn't spent 10-days in the minors). They're carrying an extra position player now, and also want to bring Bruntlett back up in the future. Lane has to clear waivers to be sent down (and it sounded like he didn't from Purp's quotes when Bruntlett was demoted). Willy T was a candidate a couple of weeks ago, no chance now that he's playing great. Either Sampson or Hirsh would require a roster move. Who? Don't think they can send Nieve back, he can't come up again for 10 days, and your bullpen's down to 5 guys. Borkowski on Saturday makes a lot of sense. Ideally, they'd bring Hirsh up & send Lane down, don't know if that's possible though. Will be interesting to see how they settle the roster for the stretch drive.
Add Buchholz to the Sampson/Hirsh mix. He went last night, on schedule to go on Saturday. Same roster move caveats apply.
Looks like Hirsch won't be pitching Saturday. http://www.roundrockexpress.com/team/expressnews/?article_id=4666 According to the article, Buchholz got the start yesterday in a 6-5 loss and Hirsh is scheduled to pitch Tuesday.
Why they have run Sampson and Albers out there ahead of Hirsch is mind boggling. The guy has a 2.03 ERA at AAA, he has NOTHING to prove, and we could use him in the bullpen at least. DD
Maybe they want to groom him fresh for a whole season next year to improve his rookie of the year chances??
because purpura says it would be an "act of desperation"? seriously, on the 610 sportsflash, purpura said he and garner would discuss it. if they pick hirsch, then his next outing will be limited in pitches, to give him 3 days rest.
Purpura has said recently that Hirsh hasn't been called up because of his minor elbow issues. They don't want to push him. That's why he hasn't thrown a complete game even when he's dominating. The don't let him go more than 7. They're afraid that a callup could lead to overthrowing in the excitement of it all and he could get injured. He's able to pitch without pain, but they're not going to push it. Be very suprised if you see him in an Astros uniform this season. By the time the PCL playoffs are over (unless RR blows a 10 game lead), they'll probably have him sit the rest of the season to be ready to go next year.
It surprise me, too, and I'll officially eat my crow Saturday when he starts. I wish him well and hope he is more comparable to Oswalt than to Redding, Hernandez, Ankiel, Saarloos, Wilfredo Rodriguez, Wandy...
