Ohio State Buckeyes big man Jared Sullinger has been medically red flagged by NBA doctors, multiple league sources told ESPN.com on Monday.

Sullinger's agent, David Falk, when reached via phone by ESPN.com said that he was not in a position to comment on the story.

Sullinger, who is projected to be a lottery pick in the 2012 NBA draft, underwent a series of medical tests at the NBA draft combine a week ago. According to sources, the doctors who looked at Sullinger were concerned with Sullinger's back.

A number of NBA team doctors have reviewed the information from the NBA and have told their front office staff that Sullinger's back issues could shorten his NBA career and some have advised their teams not to draft him in the first round.

Sullinger missed two games for Ohio State in early December with back spasms.

ESPN.com currently has Sullinger slated to go No. 10 in Mock Draft 7.0. However, such news could cause Sullinger to free fall in next week's draft.

In 2009, Pittsburgh's DeJuan Blair was also red flagged by the NBA when medical tests at the NBA combine revealed he didn't have ACL's in either knee. At the time Blair was projected as a late lottery pick. He slid all the way out of the first round.

That means he could slip to #14.

Get Gasol, draft Sullinger, trade Lowry for a solid SF.

That is a deep playoff team.

You want a lazy Pau Gasol and a rookie with a bad back? Haven't we had enough of injuries to deal with?
I am not saying Sulinger is a bad player, but we need healthy players.
There is no guarantee that Dragic will stay, otherwise I might have considered trading Kyle.

Pending the results (shortened career vs DOA)....I'd be excited to nab a free falling Sullinger. Better version of Scola.

    Parsons doesn't qualify?

Sullinger's father, Satch Sullinger, said he believes the issue isn't that serious.

"He had a bulging area that was due to his hamstring and quads being so tight," Satch Sullinger told ESPN.com senior college basketball writer Andy Katz in a phone call Monday afternoon. "It pulled on his hip flexor and he's been taking care of it to loosen it. You can call it a red flag if you want. But it's tight hamstring and tight quads. He's been to doctors, he's doing yoga and deep tissue massage. The flexibility is helping take the pressure off the area.

"We've got nothing to hide. At this stage it's all about what they can't do. Jared is a skilled player. A two-time All-American. He can play."

    . . . .

...Agent, David Falk, tells SI.com, "Jared has consulted with one of the foremost specialists of backs and spines, who has vast experience treating professional athletes. He has explained to us that Jared had extremely tight hamstrings that became tight because he had suffered an injury - that I don't think he was aware of - to his hamstring. He needs to maintain a vigilance with his flexibility. And if he does that, and keeps his weight at an appropriate level, then he should have absolutely no problems over the next 15 years."

It would be nicer to have a taller Chuck Hayes instead IMO. Sadly I don`t see one there in this draft. Nothing against Sullinger, hope he does well.

Pretty sure the "bulging area" is just his big ass.

Yes I want a 12 and 10 Gasol, in a BAD year, and sharing the shots with Kobe and an emerging Bynum, with range to 17.

Also I want Sullinger. His bad back kept him to such stat lines as...

    Michigan St. - 17 points, 16 rebounds
    Northwestern - 22 points, 18 rebounds
    Penn St. - 27 points, 13 rebounds
    11/21 - 27 and 13
    11/23 - 17 and 12
    11/25 - 14 and 13

So dumb. This is the greatest thing to ever happen to the Rockets. You snatch him up in a heart beat. He DOMINATED college basketball to the tune of 18 points/10 rebounds a game. On 52% FG shooting, AND 40% 3PT SHOOTING.

If you dare argue we shouldnt draft that on the basis his career might be cut to 8 years instead of 12, well you can go tell someone who doesnt recognize all-star potential.

So basically this means he'll be snatched up late in the first round by the Spurs and will be a starting caliber player for them in 2014. Got it.

Jonathan Givony at Draftexpress thinks some team is throwing this out hoping his stock would drop and noted that Redick had a similar issue but it didn't become an issue in his career so far.
