TOV% is a basic measure trying to capture the percentage of a player's "plays" that end in a turnover. It estimates "plays" in terms of scoring attempts (FGA + 0.44*FTA) and turnovers (TOV). Take the ratio of turnovers to plays, and you get TOV%. The problem is that's a very rough accounting of the number of plays a player is actually primarily involved in. It works fine for players who score a lot more than they pass, but it under represents the play count for players who are more pass-oriented (like Stockton or Kidd). So it's not a good stat to use to make comparisons between scoring-oriented and passing-oriented guards. It's only useful for players that have a similar ratios of assists to scoring attempts. If you added assists (or assists times some multiplier) to the denominator to capture a player's passing plays, then it would reduce the overall TOV% -- particularly so for players who pass more than they try to score the ball. Turnovers hurt the team, but Harden is so good otherwise that the net effect of his play on offense is a huge positive. If Harden somehow produced as he's producing today and dropped his turnovers under 4 a game, he'd be having perhaps the top offensive season of all time by a player not named Michael or Wilt and the Rockets might be ahead of SAS now in the standings (GSW is too far ahead to catch). But that's far more than we should reasonably expect.
I wonder how much it would change his offensive rating if he dropped his TOs to like 4.5 a game? But he is having a monster season none the less he's leading the NBA in win shares at 14.9 and the next closest guy is Russ at 14. We're can I find defensive win shares? somebody said he was number 15 in that stat this season which is odd to me. Is this because he gets a lot more blocks, steals and rebounds compared to other players at his position? Man I wish the Cavs had beat the Spurs last night. I think we can catch SA but we need to go on another 10 game win streak to do it. I don't think they can make up those 4 loses if they don't do that.
Great post brother. He was simply great on the defensive end last night. He was all over the place challenging, blocking and stealing. Fantastic post defense. I can't remember the last time he was this honed in on the defensive end. You're right that the Rockets absolutely needed to win last night, not because the season was in jeopardy or anything, but because the Rockets needed to get back on track by beating good teams simply put. It was a game the Rockets needed to win against a team that's beaten them twice already, and Harden led by example with his focus.
http://bkref.com/tiny/ycIkY Defensive Win Shares highly correlates with total minutes played, and Harden leads the league in that category. It has very little to do with any individual defensive stats he has -- it's must more dependent on total minutes and the team defensive rating. For defense, you'd be better off looking at DBPM (on basketball-reference.com) or DRPM (on ESPN.com). Harden is below average.
That's what I thought, I read somewhere that he was still below avg on defense in some ranking then I read he's 15th in dws lol so I was a little confused. I guess thats still good, shows when he's on the court, the team is playing pretty good D, which is most of the game. I think the rockets as a team have been a top 10 defense for over 25 games now. Pls correct me if I'm wrong. I honestly see a lot of promise on that side of the ball as a team. You can tell they are well coached on that end. The thing that has been killing them is the offensive rebounds but my eyes tell me that Capela in limited minutes has already made a big impact in that department. I see no reason why this team can't be top 10 defensive team moving forward. I don't think there's as many weakness as some seem to think. Partly because Anderson is really the only guy who's just not capable but he atleast tries hard. Harden is honestly not that bad and can be good when it counts like last night.
What do you think of it as a team stat vs individual stat? probably just TOS/100 possessions is better for a team.
Harden only one on that list 3 times. Nash, Paul and Wall are on there twice. Very interesting for a player that only became a point guard THIS season.
Where can i find the stat about How many points Harden contributes to his team through scoring and assisting ?
