Would be a great hire. Do it Jacksonville. “The Florida Times-Union's Gene Frenette confirms the Jaguars "do have interest" in Alabama OC Bill O'Brien for their head-coaching vacancy.” “CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported earlier in the week that GM Trent Baalke is "pushing hard" for O'Brien, and Pro Football Network's Adam Beasley and Tony Pauline say Jacksonville has "real interest" in the former Texans coach while Jaguars owner Shad Khan is "intrigued" by the potential hiring of O'Brien. His six-plus years in Houston ended after an 0-4 start to the 2020 season. O'Brien was a man starving for all-encompassing control with the Texans, handpicking a chaplain in Jack Easterby to essentially be Houston's "GM" and O'Brien's right-hand man. O'Brien also gave himself the title of offensive coordinator. He simply assumed too much power, leading to his demise. O'Brien would be a very controversial hire and wouldn't be somebody who could silently guide the Jaguars out of their cellar-dweller status. According to Beasley and Pauline, the presence of Baalke as GM is limiting the pool of candidates who would be open to coming to Jacksonville. Khan has been adamant Baalke will remain in his role. Along with O'Brien, the Jaguars have interviews set up with Cowboys OC Kellen Moore, Bucs OC Byron Leftwich, and former head coaches Jim Caldwell and Doug Pederson. Any of those would be better options than O'Brien.”
Media/talking heads: “Bad GM, maybe a little too much on his plate; Good HC.” Was he? Was he really? Is he a good gameday coach? Is he? Offense? Defense? Special Teams? Clock management/Timeouts? Challenges? Situational awareness? “We didn't have a great play there for the fourth down.” “4 division titles” … and two of those were won with a 9-7 record. For being an “offensive genius”/OC, his offenses were pretty ****ing shitty. Jacksonville pls
I think he’s a good coach . Bad GM. Keep in mind , Houston fans hated Kubiak then he goes wins a super bowl with an old Peyton Manning. at least he’s on the team plane
I don't think any football fan watching that season is going to give the majority of the credit to Kubiak, Manning or the Denver offense for that Super Bowl victory.
The hate for O’Brien is high for obvious general manager reasons But that’s on the Texans giving him that much power
He’s not a good HC, even worse GM. The hate for BoB doesn't just stem from him being a shtty gm. It's his playcalling (running it down the middle), awful time management abilities, his big ass ego , and his inability to create a top 10 offense even though he specializes in offense + had hopkins/watson. But i get y folks like him during his tenure here, he got division titles.
Hopefully scarface leaves the forum to go defend his favorite hc in the jaguars forum if the hire goes through
If jax is reading this, this would be an excellent hire. Great scheming mind. Excellent personnel developer. A+
Why? O'Brien the coach is not O'Brien the GM. Winning record 5 of 7 years, playoffs in 4 of those years. Remember, Kubiak in his 2nd stint in the NFL.
Um, Jags could do worse. Your blind hate for O'Brien is stupid. He had winning records 5 of his 7 years, playoffs 4 of those years. He will have an elite talent QB already. Watson did develop under O'Brien...whether the play calling evolved or not. We all remember Watson first 6 games. You don't think he won't learn from that? His QB at Alabama just won the Heisman. You don't want O'Brien as Jags' coach.
