First of all, it's been four players; to suggest there’s been this sustained rush that has left JJ in the dust is not only needless hand-wringing, it‘s patently untrue. Secondly, you've answered your own question... None of those guys are in line for the kind of money JJ is likely to get. Peterson is the only guy anywhere near JJ’s stratosphere and, frankly, his deal was fairly modest, which brings me to my next point…

Again, stop with the silly drama. It doesn’t look good? To who??

The Texans have ZERO incentive to offer him anything right now. He has two years left on his deal and then the Texans can franchise him, which buys them an additional year. IOW, JJ has no leverage, and the absolute last thing the Texans should do is negotiate against themselves and back a Brinks truck up to someone they can pay pennies for his production the next two years.

At this point, your offer should be a significant increase but no record-breaker; see if he’ll trade those two underpaid years left on his contract for a bigger cut sooner. That’s what Arizona did with Peterson and that’s why his deal is, relatively speaking, fairly modest.

They’re very obviously engaged in talks; both sides have already gone to the media, which means it’s highly likely the Texans are (rightly) lowballing him while JJ is very likely asking for Mario Williams money (as is his right). But the idea that the Texans are the bad guys here (not that there IS a bad guy; both sides are likely doing EXACTLY what they should be doing at this stage)…

Other than putting to rest your delusional fears, why does this have to get done rightthisverysecondOMGhe’sgoingtoLEAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!?!?!>!>!?!

The Texans hold all the leverage; if he wants his money now, he’s going to have to settle for less of it overall. That’s why the Texans hold all the leverage and they’d be fools to throw it away. If he wants to gamble and wait… he’ll likely break the bank (as the leverage moves squarely into his court) but the trade-off is that he has to suck it up and play these next two years on a vastly underpaying rookie deal.

So... don't give out contract extensions before they need to... except for JJ Watt who OMGneedsonenowormylittlefanboyheadwillexplodes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Texans, right or wrong, have ALWAYS taken care of their stars. To even momentarily entertain the idea that JJ Watt is going to be their line in the sand shift-change is just bananas.

If history holds true, JJ will sign his monster extension next off-season.

Isn't J.J. considered one of and or the best player at a none-quarterback position...??? If so it may go beyond him just being they highest paid defensive player.

Yea, it's kind of weird J.J. even said something about it. But it may not mean anything and he was just answering a question.

It sucks that we won't be able to have JJ Watt and Clowney together for the rest of their careers. Both will want to get a max deal and the Texans can't have both.

Why can't they? The cap is going to go up significantly over the next several years - and not once but every single year. The cap could be... $15-20MM more than it is today in 2-3 years. That's *another* reason why the Texans shouldn't rush this. Once the TV money kicks in... they'll be able to sign both with relative ease.

Stop being drama queens about a non-issue that's easily five years away.

Schaub is more Parsons than Watt. Schaub recruited us all the way to the number one pick.

Good lord, you people... the Texans have JJ Watt locked down for a guaranteed minimum of three years, which is why they hold all the leverage and can likely get him extended without having to go Mario Williams on him.

    Clowney is a OLB... OLB's usually don't get paid like 4-3 DE's.

I would try and lock it up before the start of the season, he deserves to be the highest paid defensive player ever... I mean he is really worth about as mush as an elite QB if you ask me, he is the definition of a game changer!

    Pay the man!

yeah you can say all that but when you are losing games in the NFL by less than a touchdown week after week there is more to it than not having talented football players.

JJ is the best defense player in the NFL and probably one of the best ever... do you not agree?

His point is if Brady was on last years team, the Texans win 9 games. So with such a drastic difference on wins and losses, how is Watt worth that much money?

did I miss something? isn't he under contract for a few more years? If he is then he needs to keep quiet and play until he gets his rightful massive payday.

You dont know that... you can't just pull a number out of the air and say if we had a certain player we would win that many games.

Everybody in the NFL knows that JJ is a freak... you are looking at one of the best football players ever and you can't even see it.

Do some of y'all really think he should not be the highest paid defensive player?
