Awesome - no brainer about signing him, but who worries about how Rick Smith structured it? Knowing Rick, he'll have some way to make it count twice as much as it should against our cap.
The narrative not two weeks ago was "OHNOES!!! HE'S GOING TO LEAVE US FOR GREEN BAY!!!>!?!>!{!l!ko!!!!!!!" because, depsite a very long history of taking care of their own, fans were convinced the Texans would screw it up and let the likely best player in franchise history walk. And when they don't... the goal posts get moved again because OBVIOUSLY Rick Smith structured the contract horribly... NEWSFLASH: If you're going to pay a guy *that* much money, it's going to impact your cap. There are no special circumstances or magic pills to avoid getting hit by a $100MM extension. So maybe, just today, we can celebrate that a tremendously awesome player/person - perhaps one of the five best in all of football - is very likely to end his career a Texan and (perhaps) be our first Canton representative. Pick it apart tomorrow...
I love the people that are screaming "What are we gonna do when his contract is later in years and we have to resign Clowney and a franchise QB?" Umm we would love for that to happen, those are the good problems to have. The only possible complaint is that it was done a year too early and even then why does it matter? It's the best defensive player in the league and the person who you can truly say is the king of the city...we haven't had one of those since Dream. Pay him and watch his deal be a cheaper one in a few years when the cap goes up and sorry ass players that couldn't hold JJ's jockstrap are signing huge deals.
Yep; the Texans, who had zero incentive to make a deal, did very well by one of their best players - that's not a terrible message to send to the NFL. You can certainly be critical of some of their decisions; but McNair absolutely runs a first-class organization. When they finally get it right - the right GM, the right head coach, the best nucleus - McNair's loyality will be seen as a giant plus. I appreciate an owner that waits a year too long much more than the owner who fires a year too early.
Nice to see him get a big deal but it is overall a bad idea. Texans will not be a good playoff level team for a min of 3 yrs so if Watt wants to go to another team and win the superbowl which he should he might not be able to do so
They could potentially make the playoffs this year. The Texans are in a division with no really good teams, it wouldn't take a lot for them to win it.
A fun example of the brilliance of "ESPN experts" <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>JJWatt deserved his $. But would I take him over Robert Quinn? Close call. Probably not. Over Earl Thomas? Close call. Probably not.</p>— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) <a href="https://twitter.com/RealSkipBayless/status/506856302296182784">September 2, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
I was shocked to see that ESPN the magazine has the Texans making the playoffs at 9-7, but losing to Indy in the wild card round. They also have New Orleans beating Seattle in the NFC championship game and Denver beating New Orleans in the superbowl.
Wow. I get Skip Bayless' only objective is to bait and troll sports fans... but it only works (and marginally, at that) if he has a shred of credibility. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but picking *any* defensive player ahead of JJ Watt is flat-out wrong.
Well that's polite of him, but no sane person puts him over Watt, he really is peerless as an NFL defender right now.
"Hey," says JJ Watt, confused why someone would bring up Luke Kuechly when discussing the best overall defender in football… Being contrarian (for contrarian’s sake) should not be confused with being smart. If you want to wallow in the same LCD mud Skip does, have at it. But JJ Watt is currently peerless and the line of people who disagree is short and rather silly.
