First off, we don't know that playing is why the hip did not heal. We also don't know for sure the Celtics would have brought "the Brinks truck out" for IT instead of trading him. For all we know, the Celts would have tossed him into the Kyrie Irving trade regardless. In fact, this was my opinion at the time. My belief is even if playing injured damaged his recovery, it did not cost IT the "Brinks truck" because no team would have given him that kind of contract. I watched the Celtics that year a lot (because of Brad Stevens) and his use of IT was amazing. The offense was designed around maximizing his strengths and the defense was built around minimizing what a giant liability he was. The Celtics had no intention of ever signing him to a mega-contract and his limitations were widely known by every team. He rode a magic carpet for one season. Period.
