He's not a great playmaker. He just isn't. He's a three point shooter. McHail said earlier in the year that he wanted Canaan to do more than just shoot threes. McHail really wants a PG that can get to the basket and finish at the rim. When the Rockets acquired Shved, I think they hoped he could be that guy, but I don't know what's up with that guy right now. Right now Canaan is a very small guard that shoots threes. But, we have Terry as our three point shooting guard off the bench. Terry shoots almost 39% from three point range, and he's a veteran, so it's going to be hard for Canaan to get minutes. Maybe there wil be a trade in the next month that will free up some minutes for Canaan. I don't think it's that big of a deal though. It not like Canaan is that big of a difference from what Terry gives us. Canaan is the new Terrence Williams. He puts up good numbers in the D-league, so people think he can be a difference maker.
The "Canaan isn't a play maker" narrative is tired. The ability to beat your man off the dribble is all that is necessary to "create" in our system of finding open guys for threes. Also, anyone who watched the games Canaan was starting knows he can not only shoot threes but get to the rim and finish effectively as well.
Get to the basket and finish at the rim, eh? Canaan, when handed the basketball gets to the rim and finishes a lot. And when he doesn't finish he gets to the line and knocks them down. Get real.
I wouldn't be surprised if Canaan starts getting regular minutes after the trade deadline provided he has not been traded.
These two guys get it. Playmaking on our offense is beat your man off the dribble get to the bucket or kick it out for a three. THAT'S IT. Canaan does these things better than anyone on our roster not named James Harden. McFail give me back my toy cannon!
From what I've seen when Canaan did start is he is an offensive threat and a playmaker. Opposing teams are forced to guard him unlike Beverly(whom I love but is best as a backup PG), thus taking pressure off of Harden
I'm not a fan of Beverley with the ball in his hands, but as a spot up shooter he hits right at 40% of his 3pt shots. Absolutly no team ignores Beverley at the 3pt line as a spot up shooter...no team. I'm a fan of Canaan but realistically speaking, I think we are hoping he is better at finishing at the rim and a better decision maker with the ball in his hands than Beverley. And it's not just driving into the paint and kicking back out to the 3pt line. One of Beverley's biggest weaknesses is deciding when to pass the ball into the post. He ignores our big man when they have a smaller guy pinned under the basket and passes to them when they are double teamed 10+ feet from the basket. Beverley's decision making with the ball in his hands is mind numbing.
He has won at every level. Won his high school state championship and got MVP. Won several conference championships and MVP's in college. The Vipers had the best record in the league when he was playing for them last year. He went to the championship game of the summer league this year as the teams best player. Then when put in the starting position for the Rockets they were playing arguably their best ball, losing 2 games out of 11 and those were to the Grizzlies on the 2nd of a back to back on the road, and by 9 to the Warriors. He's kept a great attitude about it to the public and I'm sure it's frustrating for him watching guys like Troy Daniels and Robert Covington, who he knows are inferior to him, getting burn on other teams. Trade him or let him play, he's too good of a kid and player to be held back like that.
pretty typical knee jerkin you lose at lot of us with mchale is an idiot comment guess you dont realize mchale doesnt decide whos on the team do you ? i would like to see canaan gef some time but dont blame the coach because hes not on the bench
Huh? I said that's the offense. Dribble drive and kick to the open 3pt shooter. Didn't say it was an accident. Just saying that canaan is clearly the best at creating that corner 3 besides harden.
I don't know what people don't get here: Canaan got injured and the team says that he still isn't 100% and isn't effective as a result, so he's with RGV for a rehab stint. Do we have any reason to doubt the honesty or objectivity of the Rockets coaches and management in this case? They see him in practice every day, may even have bio-metric tests done on him to know exactly how much force with every motion. If they think he can help the team in his current state-- like how he did help the Rockets for a few games before the injury-- why would they want hurt themselves by keeping him out?
I like the kid but Morey isn't going to trade him as a favor. He'll do whats right for the rockets as he should.
They kept him out of the rotation when he was healthy too. So which is it? is he not healthy enough or not good enough? or both?
You just don't get it....the NBA isn't about being a good kid. The Rockets management owes "too good of a kid" absolutely nothing. They owe the fans and the owner their best efforts to put a championship team on the court.
