We give up too quickly on our PGs. Morey should not have traded Canaan for a guy whom McHale is not gonna trust this year. At least we could have tried Canaan in the Troy Daniels role--spot shooting--when we really needed it.
Thanks McHale! <iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/O__h_gjoTII" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Dribble, dribble, pull-up -- best Harden imitation Really what are the odds of Morey knocking on his door after a couple of years recruiting him again?
It is hilarious that we got rid of him. Meanwhile we are in desperate need of people to space the floor and actually be competent from downtown. STILL. He even showed it when he was given game time. Haha. I mean. What can you even say about the ineptitude of the coaching staff at this point.
Another mess up by the idiotic, clueless McHale. What a liability this guy is. He had Canaan in the doghouse when Canaan was the ideal off guard next to Harden (who is the defacto PG) in an offensive system domianted by the 3 ball. So sick of this moron McHale forcing Morey's hand in getting rid of our better players. Canaan has a pure stroke. If you watched the few games he started earlier this season, you could see him growing in stature.
McFail had a personal problem with Canaan. He put his personal politics ahead of what's best for the team. That's the sign of a poor manager.
Well we did get back a guy that is oozing potential that does give us some future options and trade flexibility. McDaniels (as evidenced by the inclusion of a second round pick) had more trade value than Canaan had at the deadline. And McDaniels may become a cheap replacement for Brewer next season. But the deadline move of trading away Canaan for future potential made me wonder if Morey was punting on this season with Dwight's injury. He picked up Pablo but Pablo at this stage of his career is not as good a player as Canaan is. Rather than tell McHale he needed to play Canaan, Morey yielded to McHale and moved Canaan for a shot at the future and went out and got a stop gap point guard in Pablo. While it's been obvious all season that we needed that shot of playmaking that nobody on the current roster can provide when Harden sits. For those of you that don't think Canaan is a playmaker consider how Harden (and Westbrook and others) make plays. He is a scoring threat that forces the defense to defend him all over the floor. He makes plays by getting multiple defenders drawn in on him to keep him from scoring the ball. Canaan is the same type playmaker. He was the guy we should have been handing the basketball to when Harden sat. We should have catered our play to him offensively when Harden sat in the same manner we cater our offensive play to Harden when he's on the floor. Which is to say, give him the basketball, let him establish himself as a scoring/shooting threat that that cannot be ignored by the defense, and then let him create off his scoring. We have needed and lacked that type of playmaking all season when Harden sits. We are still lacking it. And that will show up in the playoffs and bite us in the hiney. Our bench unit had been great playing stellar defense and getting out on the break by turning the opponent over and forcing a ton of contested looks that are bad shots that lead to runouts. But in the playoffs we're going to need more than that from our bench unit. They're not going to get as many runouts. They're not going to be able to force as many bad shots out of our opponent. They're going to have to be able to come down on the offense end and execute successfully. And that's where we are going to miss a scorer/playmaker like Canaan. JET has been great for us. But JET does not have the ability to create great shots for others by breaking down the defense. He's old and slow footed. Got a decent pull up jumper still. But not nearly as quick as Canaan. He can't get to the rim off the dribble and create like Canaan can. All this makes me wonder if Morey has very subtly thrown in the towel on this season. Pablo is a downgrade from what Canaan could have given this team. And that's not a sleight against Pablo or JET or Bev. But there's simply nobody on this roster not named Harden that can give us what Canaan could have given this team if McHale would have recognized what was best for the greater good of this team and had given Canaan the basketball when Harden sat and spread the floor for the boy to operate.
31 points 7 boards 6 assists 3 turnovers 1 steal on 16 shots 100% at the FT line. Took the Sixers (one of the worst NBA teams ever assembled) to overtime and came within an eyelash of punking OKC. That's pretty good for a 2nd year guy who has only played a spate of minutes in his career, just playing in his 7th game for that team.
Kid had a great game. Still has a lot of work to do in order to get "several" 30 or 40 point games that require the Sixers to bench him in order to protect their draft standing.
So we got rid of a position of need to get back a rookie tweener that won't play this season, and might walk in free agency or return and still probably not get much playing time. Didn't understand the move then and still don't understand it now.
