At age 71, I could see him retiring win or lose. Hopefully we send him out with a ring if he retires. It’s obviously still undetermined if the club will ask him back regardless
Yes, he wants to come back regardless of how the season ends. Has mentioned "if I get one, then I'll want two", and also his son will be at Nats ST in the same complex with the Stros next year and how great that would be. He has mentioned wanting the 13 more regular season wins that would make him the first African American manager to win 2000. And Click said “Dusty deserves another shot for next year.” All of this is of course subject to change.
He did say win or lose, he wants to keep managing. For how long, who knows. Hopefully he wins and comes back for 1 year to defend the title. Maybe Strom comes back for a year as well. Strom said retirement is on his mind but last year he said 1 of the reasons he came back this year was because Baker's option was picked up and said he really enjoys being around Baker. But at the same time, why wouldn't either want to retire as a champion???
He has said he wants to come back. If we win the WS I say they let him come back next year. He'll deserve the opportunity!!
Hard to disagree. He got us this far with this starting staff, BP and injuries, hard to knock him at this point. So far he's been pretty good this PS. If he delivers a WS win I'll keep my mouth shut.
I think the prudent move is to make Espada the manager so he doesn’t get poached, but it’s so hard to not bring a manager back go when you’ve gone this far (and, knock on wood, win it all)
From everything I've read, this seems really important to him and I don't see him retiring win or lose the WS.
I think he comes back. He's not the best tactician during the regular season, but he knows how to manage people and personalities. I definitely can't complain about what he does in the playoffs. As long as he listens to the stat geeks, I'm good.
I do not like Dusty's game management during the regular season. In particular, I don't like seeing a below average bat in the top 6 of the order, and I think he's tougher on the better pitchers during the regular season than I would like. It seems Dusty does a great job off the field with player management. He seems to have playoff management down when he doesn't have to worry as much as stringing together 162 games of pitching.
Barring a collapse of unprecedented historical proportions *knocks on wood*, I don't see why the outcome of the WS would matter. If we win, there's more evidence to try and bring him back. If we lose, who's out there that has enough experience or cache to come in, take over the team, and maintain this success? Unless you're saying that Dusty's fate is tied to how we fare after the winter meetings and whether or not we keep Carlos in town or address our team's needs?
