Is the AFC South really the worst division in the league?

Schedule is fixed for every NFL team other than TWO games that are determined based on where you finish in the division standings.

Every year, each team in a division will play an entire other division in their conference on a rotating basis, an entire other division in the opposite conference, their own division opponents twice (14 games).

Last 2 games are the other corresponding place team from the same conference divisions that you're not already playing.

Basically, by finishing first in the AFC south this year... the Texans get New England and Oak/KC as opponents for next year (none of the other AFC south teams will have to play them).

By finishing first last year, the Texans got New England and Cincy this year.

nevermind, I see why now.. the 3rd division is the one we play all of. so 2018 it will be all of NE division and the similar spot in division (hopefully first) between cincy and KC division.

Sea, LA, Ari, Bal, KC (likely)
Texans will have to face tougher defenses in 2017

Well it'll be interesting to see how the Texans do with all of their defense back.

The way the hell too early prediction is that there are 5 decently winnable games outside of the division in the Niners, Rams, Ravens, Bengals, and Browns along with the 6 division games that are all decently winnable. Also, if KC and Pittsburgh were wins it wouldn't shock me too badly, but we clearly wouldn't be favorites.

It'll be a nice test for the team at full strength.

Correct. We play one AFC division every 4 years. Played the West this year. North next year. East in 2018.

Likewise, we played the NFC north this year, West next year, East in 2018, South in 2019.

The home/away stuff is also pre-determined... off the top of my head, don't recall the formula for that, but it does lead to some inconsistencies from year to year (for instance, we will now be playing at NE 3 years in a row 2016-2018).

5 out of 6 seasons, but 6 times in 6 years.

Still a chance for 7+ times in 6 years.

Well, when New England has 8 division championships in a row, and the Texans have 4 in 6 years, plus they play each other every 4 years by default, you're going to have this sort of scenario.

Pretty sure the Texans aren't the only team to play NE that many times in a row (excluding division opponents of course). I bet the Broncos are right up there too.

Yeah, Indy-NE too during Peyton's years.

The AFC East hasn't been too stellar either.

Jags(2-1)- I'm still skeptical about the overall strength of the division as I'm still not buying the Jags. Harvey was an obvious distraction at the time and the Texans game out flat. Got stomped at home by Tennessee and then won their London game against a beat up Baltimore team. I don't like Bortles enough to consider them a contender for the South Title.

Titans(2-1)- Wins over Jax/Seattle. Probably the best team in the division at the moment. They can be beaten by a team with a good front 7 and good QB play. If the Texans were to play the way they did yesterday this upcoming Sunday then the Texans will win.

Colts(1-2)- Will be 1-5 by the time Luck gets back. Not going to be a factor.

Jury is still out right now on this division right now.

I’m more worried about Tennessee than the jags as they looked very good against Seattle(who is on the decline defensively) and Jacksonville got us and Baltimore at a bad time. Next weeks game is going to be very big for both teams and imo will come back to haunt the loser in terms of division standings. All in all the division isn’t as bad as it once was.

No way are we the worst division. The AFC North has a total of 4 wins. Sunday's game is a must win though, especially if we want to be competitive for that Division title again. Indy will get better when Luck gets back, and we can't afford a loss to both Jacksonville and Tennessee. We lose this and we are going to be climbing out of a 1-3 record against some good teams on the road. We need this win at home!!!! Go Texans!!!

Hey, 2 AFC-S teams made the playoffs! (...even if they'll go home early.)
