Well you see what you said about the NBA in the 80's so that could be said for a lot of NBA teams who wasn't the Lakers or Celtics... But this is a football town. And considering you would put Bum #2 _ maybe you weren't much of a basketball fan.

But as I said on the 1st page... J.J. is more popular now because he's on TV every 5 minutes. But did you see the "Watt for Luck" thread. Look at the votes... People would trade his popular a** in a heartbeat.

I would wager that, on this board, I was one of the few people who actually saw the lakers-rockets series in 86 the day it happened on tape delay. I grew up a basketball fan, but I also lived through Luv Ya Blue and I can tell you that Bum was one of the most popular coaches in football history and certainly in Houston he was a God.

Akeem was greatness personified, but to say that everybody saw his greatness and were fanatical about him from a fan standpoint, is the epitome of revisionist history. Where you even born before 1986?

Everyone saw Olajuwon's greatness when he brought two championships to Houston.

I don't see how Bum would be over Earl but that's just me. There would be no Luv Ya Blue without Earl. Heck, people were calling the team the Houston Earlers.

Hakeem is/was loved in Houston, but I don't recall his being on tv, billboards, and advertisements as much as Watt. Nationally, Hakeem was never popular. Heck, he barely gets his due praise when talking about on-the-court, much less off-the-court. There was a disconnect with his heritage and speech IMO. I wouldn't expect the majority of America to embrace a dude from Africa, sorry. His HOF speech was a struggle to listen to. The most he did advertising-wise were the Taco Bell commercials with Shaq and those mainly existed because of Shaq's marketability. I still love him though, just saying how it is. Love Ya Blue was before my time, so can't really speak on it.

Watt maybe more popular than Dream because Watt is more marketable, the good old American boy who went to Wisconsin. A lot has changed in marketing in 20-25 years. But until Watt brings home a championship, Akeem or Hakeem will always be # 1 to me.

Here is a direct quote: the day they fired Bum Phillips I became a Cowboys fan. Again, this seems to be a matter of a young person trying to argue about something they know little about.

Bum and Earl over Hakeem? That can't be right. I've hardly seen anyone even mention Earl to me but probably because I'm young.

Why do you, and others, feel as though I am tarnishing the greatness of players like Campbell and Dream, by saying that their popularity did not exceed that of Bum, and more recently, JJ Watt.

This is what I don't get. You guys seem to live in the space occupied by implicit ramifications, and inappropriate yo mamma jokes, like saying your one-legged mother is a good screw and where the mere mention of climbing the Dream pedestal to knock him down a notch, requires a full assault against the perpetrator.

Are you ready for an example? Remember these examples are only meant to enliven the argument by putting distance between the more emotionally-charged player comparisons of this thread with other examples. Don't get queasy that I am trying to pull a fast one on yo. In other words, if you are a Von Miller fan or a Harry Potter lover, my apologizes ahead of time.

So, how many people are in love with Tim Tebow? While Tebow is not half the player that Von Miller is, I'd venture to say that more than a few people in Denver would rate Tebow's popularity ABOVE that of Miller's. Does this alone diminish Miller's greatness? Absolutely not. It just means that Tebow has a fan base.

Give you another example. I'd venture to say that J.K Rowling books, to many people, are more enjoyable than David Foster Wallace books are. If you were a David Foster Wallace fan and I said, hey more people have read JK Rowling's books than they have read Infinite Jest, would you then immediately accuse me of trying to under-value the greatness of DFW? That would be ludicrous. Right?

At the moment, yeah Watt is at the top. No way Akeem is lower than 3.

Umm, Hakeem in his prime was way more popular outside Texas than Watt right now. End of the day Watt is a defensive freak player, Hakeem's finesse and skill on both ends really connected with ALL SPORTS fans. I live outside Texas atm, Watt really isnt close (even though i think he's the best non-qb in league).
