On an open market, all things considered equal, he shouldn't be a max player. He should be a $12-14/year guy, similar to Lowry. But all things aren't equal, and the Lakers/Knicks will be desperate for a "splash" so you can assume with some certainty that this summer Dragic will be a max player. Personally, I don't want to tie up $20/year to a player who is probably at the tail end of his prime unless the NBA doesn't go the route of cap smoothing, i.e. we can still have major cap space in 2016.
If you look at Steve nashs career trajectory as compared to dragic.... There are some similarities... Hopefully dragic can follow a similar career path and be extremely effective even into his mid 30s
This question is what's wrong with the NBA.... There's nothing about Dragic that says "max player".. That Joe Johnson contract ****ed up how teams overpay for max potential instead of the actual player...
Sure... For that moment... But a player like him is equivalent to buying a car off the lot... Value goes down each day... Whomever offers him the max is clearly just trying to make headlines of some sort IMO...
The question is if a guy performs up to his contract. Parsons is not but Ariza is, for example, because Parsons is getting paid almost twice as much. Will Dragic perform up to $18mil or whatever? If he goes 20 and 6 on .600 TS% while making 3rd team all NBA again, then probably.
Interesting question. Look at Lowry in last Summers free agency. It depends on the market for PG's. There are only 30 open slots in the league, and very few openings. Even fewer open slots also with max cap space. Its all about Supply and demand. Sure there is money now in New York and LA and those teams tend to overspend, and the cap going up after next season might make a team like them say WTH. I seriously DO NOT think that teams will INITIALLY offer Goran a max deal. No way, no how. If you make an offer based on analytical data he's going to be worth a market dictated number probably somewhere between 10 and 14 mil per based on comparables. But we are basing that off of an ASSUMPTIONS that teams like New York and LAL will make smart offers. That's assuming alot.
I can't see morey paying 20mill for dragic when he didn't want to fork over 12 for Lowry. Unless the cap figures have inflated more than he predicted
the more i think about this the more ludicrous a proposition it is. paying 20m/yr for a player who isn't even a top 5 pg...arguably top 10, in a conference stacked with PG's...glad ya'll aren't the GM. I'd pay him 13-15/yr.
