Someone brought up the fact that the Astros are a better ball club without Adam Everett at shortstop. It was after he broke his hand last year that the team got on a roll, and when he was out at Milwaukee earlier this month, the team swept the Brewers. Is his defense overated? Would the team be better off with Vizcainos more consistent bat? How many times in a game would Everett's glove be more valuable than Viz's bat? I wonder..... DD
Everett is a better shortstop. He is struggling right now though. Offensively, Vizcaino will hit for a higher average, while Everett has more pop. I don't think Vizcaino was the catalyst for last year's run.
I like Viz better. Viz is defense is solid even though he don't have the range of Everett. He is also a very smart hitter who knows how to hit tough pitcher something Everett is horrible at.
The guy I want is Julio Lugo. He has became a top 10 shortstop. His defense has improved a lot and he is a good offesnive player. He also has like 35 stolen bases. We gave him up for free because his money hungry wife accused him up hitting her.
Vizcaino isn't having a good year, and he's old, so I'm not sure he'd be a big improvement over Everett. But of all the full-time players in the NL, Adam has the 2nd worst batting average, the worst on base percentage, and the 7th worst slugging percentage. And he's struck out 100 times, which is ridiculous for a guy who's got little power. In short, Adam Everett is a terrible offensive player, to the point where he's a liability even if he was a gold-glove type at SS, which he's not. Obtaining another shortstop should be a priority in the offseason, imo.
All of the Chronicle news articles are saying Adam is thinking more about his family and daughter who recently had surgery. My question is...if he can't keep his head in the game on the field, then why is he out there? That's just stupid. We need someone who is not distracted out there.
Isn't Adam a free agent at the end of the season? I was thinking about a certain Nomar who is a free agent at the end of this season as well. Get someone in the with somewhat of a stick and who can throw the ball to first without making errors. I think he as 18 errors this season, mostly in attempts to throw the ball to first. I say let him walk at the end of the season.
Naw, Adam is not a free agent. I think he is arbritration eligible this year so he may be a free agent in 3 years.
I don't think you can put it on Everett. It's like saying that the team has lost 17 of Clemens 31 starts, so they shouldn't start Clemens. Granted, a starting pitcher has a bigger impact on the game than any other player, but I don't think you can directly attribute it to Everett.
Ask the Astros pitchers. I suspect they'd rather have Everett (around 1 error every 10 games the past 2 years) as opposed to Lugo (about 1 error every 6 games) playing behind them.
We should defintely try to replace Everett for next year. Right now, Viz is OK as a utility player but he is past the point of being an everyday player. He might think about retiring after this season.
What about Burke or Bruntlett? Burke was an All American SS at Tennessee and Bruntlett is a SS too, right? Sure they are not better hitters right now, but with consistent Playing time they would have to be better....than Everett. DD
