At the end of the season, Adelman and also the players mentioned how much they needed McGrady at the end of the games in close losses as well.

We won't know what will happen with McGrady for sure yet.

If nothing else, Morey is good at baiting other GMs. You might even call him a master at it.

I think this factors in to Morey's pitch about McGrady's window being from December to March. A huge expiring deal plus having insurance covering most of his salary during the season cannot help but be attractive to franchises that are struggling economically. Indiana Pacers. New Orleans Hornets. Let's make it happen! Exploit! Exploit!

I would be very happy to see us exploit them, however NO could ask us to take the struggling Peja plus Chandler if we are interested in the latter, and the Pacers might demand us to take the injured Dunleavy in return if we want Murphy for instance.

Not necessarily. While the Rockets likely won't expect to have cap room in 2010, that doesn't really mean that other teams will be able to use that fact to force the Rockets to make a bad deal. The other teams still have their own financial woes to deal with, and the Rockets' financial condition is much better than most teams'.

I, like most of the people on this BBS, is still DYING to know EXACTLY how much salary is being picked up by insurance while T-Mac is out, or whether insurance won't pick up his salary until he is deemed to be out for the season. Depending on how the insurance provisions of T-Mac's deal work, if T-Mac's salary is currently being paid by insurance, teams might be able to save more money by trading for him this summer, making him more valuable in trades right now. On the other hand, if insurance doesn't kick in until he is ruled out for the year, teams might be more willing to trade for T-Mac come February's trade deadline, since it will be able to avoid paying much of T-Mac's early season salary as "dead weight".

Another thing to consider if T-Mac is not actually traded this summer: the possibility of the Rockets getting a Disabled Player Exception (DPE).

    http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#Q19

If T-Mac cannot come back by the trade deadline, the team may want to call in an independent, league-appointed physician to examine T-Mac's knee. If it is ruled that he will be unable to play that season, it is POSSIBLE (but perhaps not overwhelmingly likely) that the NBA will grant the Rockets a DPE. Due to T-Mac's high salary, the DPE would essentially amount to having a second MLE, except that the DPE could also be used to trade for a single player making up to the then current MLE salary.

Since McGrady's contract is coming off the books, the Rockets may (as a practical matter) have the cash available to pursue one or more players with their MLE, plus attempt to trade/sign another significant (albeit not All-NBA) player with the DPE. Unfortunately, the very fact that T-Mac's contract expires in 2010 may discourage the league office from granting the DPE in the first place.

Bottom line: Daryl Morey will not make a bad deal just to get rid of Tracy McGrady; and even if he doesn't make a trade, T-Mac may still net the team an asset if the Rockets manage to obtain a DPE from the league office.

There are more options out there than many people realize.

Morey says in the radio interview "Tracy... they're calling because a lot of teams are trying to help themselves financially".

The insurance on McGrady is a private policy. We know it's private because it can be traded. If it were NBA insurance it cannot be traded.

Since it's private the only way it's known, "McGrady's contract is huge ($22.5 million next season) and then it expires. Until he plays, insurance can take care of the cost through sometime next February. And teams all know this", is if the info is coming from the Rockets themselves. All the teams know this, now the Chron's telling the public... The Rockets want everyone to know this.

The Rockets set themselves up to take a lot of calls on him.

The internaional player angle was good too.

International players are "undervalued". Pick up some players like Scola "very hard", "maybe next tier down", "could be better than a lot of free agents we're looking" at.

    Two things on this^

    1. Dunleavy is Shane Battiers best friend in the league.
    2. Troy Murphy is a horse. He put up amazing stats last year. He was a top rebounder in the league, can play the post, and shoot the 3 ball. I would love a guy like that on the Rockets.

Not that I think it is possible, or very inticing to the Pacers, but would be a great deal for us.

Right. T-Mac had painful career threatening Microfracture surgury just to spite the Rockets.
