So I have a college exam, help me guys, what's the difference? Say if aliens look at the earth what would make them notice us before other animals? We have free will but we're just as predictable as other animals...eh?

Seriously, human beings rule the Earth.

If you are trying to decide which species to make contact with, you probably want to pick one that 1) you can communicate with, and 2) that is in the strongest position of leadership. Here on Earth, that species is Human Beings.

    Case closed.

Walking upright, using tools and cars, not being caged or out in the wild. Not sh-tting and p-ssing everywhere, sometimes while walking or running.

At the end of the day, we are machines, very complex organic machines.

There is no evidence that we are anything more, and the deeper we delve into things, the more clear that is the actual truth.

Anything else is just a "belief"

If I were an alien, I'd probably observe a bit and then ask the dolphins for their perspective.

Belief is the ultimate fuel for this machine.

There's some perks to being a meatbag.

Imagine you separate human beings from Earth. Imagine us humans then got in our spaceships and flew to this human-less Earth. Would we be much more interested in communicating with Chimpanzees than, say, the Slender Loris? Or would they all just be quaint, stupid monkeys?

Human beings have civilizations and communities that are man-made constructs. New York, for example would be easily identifiable and one could assume after having seen it that whatever the heck it was that created it is the dominant species on the given planet.

We have farms and surplus agriculture, which shows that we are able to sustain ourselves by creating resources from other resources that would be too complex or obscure for any ordinary mammal to figure out.

Basically, the species that is able to create anything synthetic or artificial, or anything more "complex" than the given nature on a planet, or is taking advantage of the resources of a planet is more likely to be the species in charge. This is what sets us apart from other ordinary mammals. Our self-awareness allows us to "progress."

Also, what makes you think we have free will?

I think it would be obvious to any alien that Houston sports fans were the highest form of life.
