This might have been better in one of the hurricane threads, but I wanted to make it known that my adopted hometown deserves a huge pat on the back for opening its arms to the hurricane victims. I'm watching from 3,000 miles away and I couldn't be more proud of Houston right now.
I was thinking the same thing about my hometown as I'm watching from Nashville... Proud to see Houston helping so many people... I'm sure Houston will to its best. I interned in the Mayor's office this summer and have faith there are a lot of capable people running Houston to handle this.
I was going to start this thread even though I heard some idiots on the radio saying they didn't want these people over here. Houston is looking like gold, screw the ugly views.
As someone who was born and raised in Houston, I could not be more proud of my former hometown. The next time any of these jack-a$$es from the NY Times ever try to paint The great city of Houston as a "hell-hole" or other demeaning name, I will be very quick to refresh their memories about how Houston, as well as San Antonio and Dallas, stepped up the efforts to help so many in such an unfortunate time.
madmax.. it was a good experience. I worked under Mayor White's deputy chief of staff in the Mayor's office and it was very good to see that they work hard to make sure the tax payers get the most out of their tax dollars. good experience.. and good to have a recommendation letter from the Mayor to use in the future I've been watching the national news today hoping to see Bill White on TV..
I'm watching from NYC and wishing I could do more... I am glad my hometown is getting involved CNN said it like this: "the bad side of human kind is in New Orleans, the good side of humanity in a situation like this is in Houston"
Yeah, I hear ya....kind of like being a Harvard graduate playing in a College Station poker game. Instant winner. But it's still true...he is the best mayor of Houston in my lifetime.
And that's a long time folks. I'm partial to Kathy Whitmire but I have no complaints about Bill White.
I once saw Bill White cure syphilis! Definitely the best mayor I've had the honor of being a houston resident under.
actually it wasn't a snl reference, but my favorite disease to be cured of, others have recently passed away of. so I figured I'd save the tasteless reference to it. so i picked another one
I was thinking of the Bill Bradski skit. Man, if no one else remembers that skit, boy do I feel like a jackass!
Kudos to Rod Ryan at the buzz too. 40+ hours and almost a quarter million raised. For a station that I usually b**** about - damn that is incredible!
you know, im not saying i dont want those hurricane victims in houston, but i understand why some people would not want them to be there. its desperate times for these people and sometimes people act completely different when they are desperate, ex. robbing, looting
