Ugh...tomato based chili...Yuk. I actually prefer beans in my chili or whatever... "chili soup." But I cannot abide slimy canned tomatoes. I also prefer to use beef broth, beer, and even some chicken broth rather than water.

Chili with beans is called chili and beans or chili stew.

It isn't Chili. Beans absorb a lot of the flavor that's supposed to be in the meat. I don't prefer it with beans, but if other people like the beans that's fine. But they are eating chili and beans not chili.

That's why you only add the beans after the meat has been simmering in the juices for a couple hours. You don't want the beans to be in too long anyway, because they'll get too soggy.

to me the issue of whether or not you use real chilies vs. packet of seasoning is a bigger deal than whether or not you have beans in your chili. how can you call it "chili" if you dont even have chilies in there?

the people who actually invented chili were not so snobby about it. and arent you from tennessee? you are a yankee too as far as im concerned! :)

tomatoes in chili is a worse offense than beans.

the O.G. texans who invented chili often used beans and they still called it chili - if it had meat it was chili con carne.

Chili with beans (if you want to call it chili) is disgusting!!! I'm with others, it is either a soup or stew....NOT chili!

Oh come on. I understand the "pure chili" argument, but how are beans going to make anything disgusting? I mean, they're beans.

isnt chili a type of stew?

as far as im concerned thats a selling point!

i wonder how those cattle driving cowboys of the late 19th century would have felt about some of yalls fancy-pants chili packets? premade 'chili' seasoning? i dont think they had that on the chisholm trail. if you want to be a texas-chili purist (whatever that is), i sure hope you dont use seasoning packets!

chili is undoubtedly a form of stew and has a close analogue in gulasch, which never has beans.

I eat chili without beans. If it has beans I will not eat it. Changes the texture and flavor thus making it inedible or disgusting, at least to me.

    it certainly isnt soup!

for the record though, chili is most definitely a type of stew.

If it has beans in it, it isn't chili. That's all I know.

Made this last night. Taste was good, but needed a thickening agent which I unfortunately did not have on hand.
