The MAVS played zone against the Warriors last night and gave up 120 points

For those who believe GSW is ripe for defending with a zone, let me ask you ...

    What is a zone buster?

    ------------------------------------------------------
At 9, Curry was the smallest kid on his rec league team, brought off the bench only when his coach needed to shoot defenses out of the zone. "The zone buster," Curry says with pride. "It all developed from there."

    Why?

I'm pretty sure our defensive scheme of switching every pick never fails.

I'm pretty sure our defensive scheme of every player on the court collapsing into the paint once the slightest bit of penetration is seen never fails.

That's why the team continues to do it game after game after game.

    Right? Right?

Agree 100%. if wings played closer to 3 point shooters and allowed the shot blockers to guard the paint ,we would be a better defensive team.

On my level you can have an open 3 every possession if opposite teams plays zone defense. Standard zone defense sounds like a no no vs Warriors. For a team like Rockets, who fail to run the simplest plays, complicated next level zone defense would be rockets science type of puzzle. Harden can't play defense. If there's a revolutionary 4 vs 5 defense then lets do that. It's called Vivek's defense I believe.

This. If you let a team full of guys with bad defensive iq run a zone, a good team will slaughter them. Zone defense is the hardest to master, if one guy messes up the whole defense folds.

He plays a 1man-zone while the rest of the team is playing man on man, it's very interesting to watch.

According to JB, Harden's job is to guard 2 to 3 players at the same time playing help defense, so fans are not too smart to figure out he's actually guarding people, even though it looks like he isn't, because it's part of the defensive scheme.

Harden isn't asked to guard anyone 1 on 1 until the 4th quarter. JB pointed how that Harden is a shut down defender in the 4th and he gets tons of rebounds, therefore, Harden is a great defender, when the coach ask him to play D in the 4th.

    JB actually said that!!!!

    JB ACTUALLY SAID IT!!!

"However, Harden has had more of the instances that built his reputation as a disinterested defender. Some of that comes with his place in the Rockets' schemes. With Harden often matched up with poorer shooters, he is the player assigned to rotate and help in the lane. He gets many of his deflections and steals that way, but it also leads to him ball-watching and losing his man on cuts or straying too far or too long to get back and contest jump shots.

"That's the part of the game you have to pay close attention to to understand," Bickerstaff said of Harden's responsibilities away from the ball or his man. "A lot of stuff that we do is because of our schemes. The spots that he's on the floor puts him in a position he may have to guard two guys for a moment. The average fan doesn't know that, so they make the assumption he's in the wrong because it's the easy thing to do.
    Rockets

"When it's at that time in fourth quarters, we put him on guys, and he locks guys up. Anybody can watch a YouTube video that somebody makes and make an assumption off that. But if you really study it, pay attention to it, when it matters most, he's at his best."

    No. 2 rebounding guard

Bickerstaff also cited Harden's rebounding. Though some of that comes because Harden crowds the lane, putting him in position to rebound, his average for defensive boards is second among guard.

"Defensive rebounding is a huge part of defense," Bickerstaff said. "

I think about this every game we struggle to stop a team. Why we don't at least try zone is beyond me. Our players are quick enough to rotate, and we have limited big men so it would help having the big man play the box and 1.
I think it would help our rebounding as well if everyone is in the paint.

Soo, the coaching staff is giving our worst defensive player, who has no defensive IQ, a special task on defense that sounds crucial? That's some great coaching.

2nd: Defensive rebounding is a relatively small part of defense, decreasing the opponent's fg% is much more important. Harden murders our defensive rotations and leaves his man, doesn't focus, etc. rebounding doesn't make up for that.

3rd: Harden being put on crucial players in the 4th and locking them up? When does that happen?

Defensive rebounding is of course an important part of defense. But having a perimeter guy sagging off his man to stay near the basket is NOT how you bolster your defensive rebound. The proper way to be a good defensive rebounding team is to have good rebounding BIGS.

If man defense fails, find better men.
