I work at Harris County Psychiatric Center (HCPC) as a psychiatric technician. Today was the fourth day in a row where I was assigned as a 1:1 staff. That requires me to stay within arms reach of the patient unless otherwise specified (some 1:1's are just when the patient is awake - mine is asleep right now.) I've been assigned to a teenage austistic boy. While he was asleep earlier he pissed his pants. He is unable to bathe or care for himself. So it became my resposibility to make sure he was clean. I tried to direct him to the shower but he became agitated. He then grabbed my hand and dragged me to the bathtub on the unit. Have you ever washed a complete stranger? I've always done my best to avoid such a task but, I had to wash every nook and cranny on the boys body. He is a great kid but, I hope I never have to do that again.
How is psychiatric work in general? Is it rewarding or do you just deal with unappreciative patients all day? Is it dangerous..like do patients attack you? Just wondering as it seems like one of the more interesting fields of medicine/health care.
Once someone took my stapler. After I bought a new one, someone else put the stapler in bowl of jello.
This will be my 20th year as a volunteer counselor at a camp for children/ young adults with special needs. You "just do" the hard stuff and enjoy the rest. You have to find a way to mentally distance yourself from what you are actually doing and just complete the task.
I worked at the Rockets in 2005. I had a freak accident involving a cabinet and my nose so I had to be carried out on a stretcher front of EVERYONE on my floor. Talk about an embarrassing moment.
