Dang I'm sorry to hear that man. Don't beat yourself up over this it wasn't your fault, just a rough situation. My dog passed away last year and it's a terrible feeling. With time comes healing though. Hang in there bro, it'll get better.
He has never roamed out of our front yard. And I know I should have had him leashed. But I tried. I tired so hard. I just hope he knows that. I barely type this with all the stitches in my hand. The dogs that did this will be put down, but again, I don't care. I just miss my little brother so much
Don't listen to him, you did the best you could and there's nothing you can change now. Remember the good times you two had together and buy a new little friend when you're ready. All the best to you and your family.
This. You ran to a couple of pitbulls with complete disregard for your own safety to save your brother! The little guy knows you did your best. I know a lot easier said then done, but when you think about him try to remember the good times. Whenever I walk my dog, I have pepper spray and a pocket knife on me all the time. Hope I never have to use it. Just ordered a taser after reading this thread. Please remember though, little dogs are just like human kids. Always have them leashed from now on and just carry some pepper spray with you as well. You never know. I also can't believe how many owners don't have a collar on their dogs. Go a step further and get them microchipped as well. Our little poodle was attacked by two pitbulls a few years ago. My wife was walking him in the apartments we used to live in. Two pitbulls come out of nowhere and before my wife knew what was happening, one has Walle in his mouth and took off with him. My wife ran after both the pitbulls! We were EXTREMELY lucky though. She starts screaming at them, one jumps on her and scratches her back. Neighbors come out and the one holding Walle lets go of him and my wife picks him up. Both pitbulls run away, but are later found and put to sleep. Walle had no injuries, but my wife had some deep scratches on her back, but all in all, could have been much much worse. She called me and I've never driven from downtown to our apartment in Clear Lake faster in my life. Walle was in shock for a few weeks, did not want to outside. But thank god he grew out of it. I never blamed the pitbulls for anything, but I would have no problem shooting the ****ing owner if my wife or my dog were seriously hurt. I am not much for praying, but I'll say one for your brother, you and your family tonight.
THIS. Is there anything you can do even though your dog was off the leash too? I mean pit bulls man. Im bigger then your mikko and I would be scared of pittbulls, 2 at that!
Ask your friend if the Pitbull is good wit dogs. Not all of them are dangerous like this. Some are very sweet and can get along with other dogs.
Not to derail, but I agree that some are better than others. I also believe (just based on my own experiences and understanding of breeding) that *most* of them have a switch that can get flipped. A lot of times you don't know what will do it or how it happens. After what happened to our dog, I just have a no pitbull interaction policy, but I admit it's a little extreme. Thoughts still go out to the OP. And for those asking if anything can be done, read the thread carefully. The owners have agreed to put their two pitbulls down.
So the neighbor had 2 unleashed pitbulls outside and not in their yard? If that's the case, not only should those pitbulls be taken away but the owner should be fined as well. I am sorry, but I hate when people let their dogs out without a leash. I don't care how harmless they may be. I walk my dogs on a leash and I hate when I come up to a house where the owners just let their dogs roam and they run up to my dogs and my dogs start pulling, etc...
My condolences on your loss, it will be almost a year in August when I lost my best friend as well. It will get easier and know you tried your best.
****. Props to you for trying to save the little guy, you took a bite, that's honorable. It sounds like the Male owner of the Pit Bulls is responsible, but the dumb woman is the one who let them out without a leash. Women should not be allowed to handle strong breeds. My cat was killed by a doberman when the dumb LADY walking him couldn't hold onto the leash when he lunged at my cat who was running across the street at the time.
Neighbor already agreed to put dogs down. A fine is a bit much. Mine as well fine every dog owner who doesn't leash their dog. And fined for what exactly? Although I agree that ALL dogs need to be leashed at all times. I don't care if you have the most obedient and most smartest dog in the world. Too many things can happen that are out of your control and could result in a sad story like this one.
So sorry for your loss. In a two yr period we had to put down all three of our pugs. Hardest thing we ever had to do. Someone passed on this poem to us during all of this, and it helped a lot. Hope it helps ease your pain. Www.petloss.com/rainbowbridge.htm And you sharing this was not a waste of time. God bless.
Sorry dude. ...but i blame the neighbours, not the pitbulls. My last 3 have been 170-200lb mastiffs & i got a new one as soon as i lost the former avg 8yr lifespan...#inspiredbyBillCosby- "i'll make another that looks just like you". Each was a good boy & each differently socialised/temperamented but i understood them well enough to realise what situations to avoid, which could be unleashed in certain situations, etc... (one was gentle w/all beings, another completely disinterested in other dogs & the current, an Alpha who is overly possessive of me...raised my voice at a gf & his demeanor to her changed overnight.). Some people have no common sense. KNOW YOUR ANIMAL! "L'enfer c'est les autres".
Don't get me wrong, what happened to the original poster is sad. The fine I suggested would be for breaking the leash law. Most cities have them and they go something like this: The fine can serve as a warning to the owner and others to keep their pets on a leash and in control. Like I said, I like animals but I hate it when I walk and the neighbors dogs rush towards mine - its even worse when we are walking with the baby - who knows what the other dogs can do.
So sorry for your loss. Dogs are family. I'll definitely say some prayers. BUT....what are you doing about your dumb-ass neighbors? I know you're LIVID. I am just reading the ordeal. My god. Maybe I missed that post...but... I'm hoping you are going to prosecute them/sue them/ whatever, because it's not right that they get to keep their vicious dogs and you have to live with the agony of knowing your innocent poodle bled to death because of your neighbor's ignorance. I love all dogs, and I wouldn't debate the whole pitbull thing, but if your dog attacks mine to the point of injury and is off-leash, I'm going to sue your ass to make you feel the living-hell you put my dog through.
I'm pretty sure a leash law exists in Houston. Example: http://www.chron.com/news/article/House-measure-adds-bite-to-leash-law-in-Houston-1579704.php
No legal action will be taken. The male owner agreed that the dogs should not have been out, it was the wife that did that. Both dogs will be put down. We have a good relationship with our neighbors, and this was just an accident no one wanted. He will be paying the medical bills, and his condolences were sincere. I'm just glad that Mikko went quick, and was surrounded by his loved ones. I don't think he would be able to live a quality life after the whole ordeal. My family misses him immensely, but we know he's no longer hurting and that he's in a better place.
