HS student killed in love triangle with his 48yr old Math Teacher

A 48yr old teacher had been sleeping with this 20 yr old guy since he was in high school. Behind his back, she seduces another high school student. He comes in the unlocked front door and sees them naked. He kills the guy with a knife and calls 911 for the poor sob.


All this for a woman that looks like the Dr. Seuss's Grinch with those wierd eyes, sharp teeth and narrow smile.

New details released by the Chandler Police Department shed light on the fatal confrontation between two men caught in a love triangle with their teacher.

Early Friday morning Sixto Balbuena, 20, of Tempe, discovered his former teacher and girlfriend, Tamara Hofmann, with one of her students at El Dorado High School in Chandler at the house she rented, according to court records released by the Chandler Police Department.

Balbuena, who had been granted liberty from the U.S. Navy, reportedly fatally stabbed the student, Samuel Valdivia, 18, of Chandler. Police found Valdivia on the bathroom floor after Balbuena called 911 to get him medical help. Balbuena had blood stains on his torso, face and arms when police arrived to the Chandler house.

Balbuena finding Hofmann, his former teacher when he was at Marcos de Niza High School, naked with Valdivia, who was wearing his boxer shorts, reportedly prompted the fatal stabbing, according to a probable cause statement.

Last Friday didn't mark the first time Balbuena and Hofmann had a run in with Chandler police. The pair was found inside Hofmann's vehicle in Nov. 2006 parked outside a Chandler house. Balbuena had Hofmann's bra and told police she had changed clothes in the vehicle.

A homeowner on the street had called police to report a possible vehicle burglary. Hofmann told police Balbuena, then 17, was a family friend and that they had stopped on the street to empty an ice chest. Police also found alcohol in the car, and Hofmann admitted to drinking one beer while at a soccer game.

Balbuena's parents didn't know he was with Hofmann and confirmed she often picked their son up to tutor him in math. The two reportedly denied having a sexual relationship and the case was closed.

Hofmann, worked at Marcos de Niza in the Tempe Union High School District from 2005 to 2007. The district removed her from the classroom, and she resigned from the district in May 2007. District spokeswoman Linda Littell wouldn't elaborate on why Hofmann was removed from the classroom.

Balbuena drove to Hofmann's house from California and called her cell phone. When she didn't answer the call, he entered the unlocked house and heard noises coming from the master bedroom, according to the records.

He told police he thought something was wrong with Hofmann. He didn't call out her name or hear anyone talking but grabbed a knife from the kitchen before walking into the bedroom. He then saw Valdivia run into the bathroom and chased after him.

Valdivia had gone into the water closet where the toilet was and struggled to keep the door closed while Balbuena attempted to push through into the room. Balbuena found Hofmann naked in the closet with Valdivia clad in only his boxers.

Balbuena told police he punched and kicked Valdivia and grabbed whatever objects he could find, including a computer printer, to hurl at him. He then stabbed the victim and told police "he didn't want to kill the victim, just hurt him to let him know how he [the victim] hurt him by sleeping with his girlfriend," according to the records.

Balbuena then, "stuck the knife in too far, stating that the blade went in like going into butter," according to the records. He then turned his attention to Hofmann, threw her to the floor, and demanded to know how long she had been cheating on him.

Balbuena is being held on a $100,000 bond.

Students at El Dorado High School in Chandler spent Monday writing down what they would miss about classmate Valdivia. One student remembered Valdivia as "My Superman." He was always willing to give hugs and had a big smile on his face, the student wrote.

"He was a very well-liked young man," El Dorado Principal Ramona Gonzales said. "It's a big loss for us."
