I thought this was a lot of fun when we did this about a year ago, so how about another one?? Object: To determine which poster can go the longest without mis-spelling a word. There was some controversy last year about the rules, so I suggest the following applications: Puntuation should not count (commas, hyphens and apostrophes) Proper capitilization should not count Mis-spelling of proper names should not count Mis-use of word context SHOULD count (i.e using "to" instead of "too" or "your" instead of "you're/you are") Typos should count (transposing letters/intent does not matter; its all about execution) As soon as you are eliminated, you have to put "I am a bad speller" in your signature until the eventual champion is crowned. I plan on keeping track of a "kill" leaderboard. Mainly because I was the leader in kills last year and I'll probably be the first eliminated since I am a reellly baad spellur. Game starts Friday at 7am!!!! No late entries!!!! Also, if you add your name to the game, you must actual post consistently. None of these posters that only post a few times a week!! Please post all kills here in this thread instead of hijacking other threads. I forgot who last year's champion was. Someone please remind me. My favorite to win: Sir Jackie Chiles (who else??)
I'll play. I think I made the final three last time. The word "millennium" knocked me out. Damn those double n's! I agree with all of your rules, especially this one: Mis-use of word context SHOULD count (i.e using "to" instead of "too" or "your" instead of "you're/you are"). Nothing makes me angrier than "should of/could of/would of."
off to a good start codell... (sorry, couldn't resist) Wonder what the definition of "posting consistently" is: if "<i>only</i> a few times per week" doesn't work, guess I'm out. (I do have a job... with actual work... )
I always thought you posted consistently. I'm mainly talking about posters who will disappear for a week or two at a time.
I'll play. But I don't post much, so should there be a 'Minimum Posts Per Day Average' requirement? I'm currently at 1.59 ppd, btw.
I'm in and I do like this rule: I mean if you say something like "Your the greatest." and you actually mean "You're the greatest." that is a mis-spelling because you intended to use another word and not the one you actually used. What about if someone uses something like this: nonpayment instead of non-payment or vice versa is one way right and the other wrong? What about when people make up words which many people think are right but are wrong? (Example: "anyways" is not a word)
Lil Pun, I had mentioned that I felt that word punctuation should not count. But if everyone else feels differently, we can change that rule. As far as making up words, I am not sure. Should basic jargon be exempt?? We'll just have to hope everyone believes in the honor system.
The Safari users will have an advantage too, they can turn on in-line spell-checking in their browser... Hell, turn on? I leave it on anyway. Maybe I should exclude myself on cheating and low post-count grounds.
I'll play. I was a victim of the hyphen kill last time. Vengeance will be mine (not the member of the BBS).
I don't think anyone cares enough about an online spelling contest to go through that trouble. And if they do, then they obviously have problems.
Speaking of foreigners, I know the Euro way of spelling certain words is a lil different than the American way (defense vs. defence). That is not grounds for a kill IMO. Oh, and I forgot to add. To make yourself more recognizable as a contest participant, add the following phrase to your signature: How is my spelling?
