UH Legend Gets Hall Call University of Houston basketball legend Guy V. Lewis was voted into the newly created National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. Lewis, who will be inducted in November in Kansas City, Missouri, will be part of the second ever induction class that also includes ten other inductees and featuring UCLA all-time great Kareem Abul-Jabbar. When it came to college basketball, Lewis' ideas were always Texas big. He was the first person to put a college basketball regular season game in the national spotlight by creating "The Game of the Century," in which the No.2 ranked Houston Cougars hosted the No.1 ranked UCLA Bruins in front of 52,693 fans at the Astrodome. The Cougars shocked the Bruins with a 71-69 victory and halting the Bruins win streak at 47. Over his 32 year career, Lewis racked up 592 career wins and led the Cougar basketball program to five Final Four appearances and two national title games. Lewis is also the only college basketball coach ever to produce three of the top 50 NBA players: Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler and Elvin Hayes. Lewis was also voted the national coach of the year in 1968 and 1983. http://www.houstonist.com/archives/2007/04/04/uh_legend_gets.php
I'm sorry that this is in a forum that doesn't get looked into by most of the members. Guy V. should have been in the Hall ages and ages ago, and deserves trumpets blown in joy for the slight finally being corrected. At least they did it before he died of old age! My father knew Coach Lewis, seeing him socially, and was a great admirer of him, as are any who followed his great teams at UH. He coached several current and future Hall of Famers, whipped the butts of several programs back in the days when UH belonged to no conference, partly because they didn't want to face the Cougars on a regular basis. Congratulations Coach Guy V. Lewis! Overdue, but none more deserving!
Guy V not in the hall of fame is a joke, still there would be zero debate if he just got it done in one of those final fours.
Now that he's in the College Basketball HOF, we need to get him into the all encompassing Basketball HOF. Dude never had a losing season. NEVER. That's impressive.
thats the college hall of fame, thats not the same as the basketball hof in springfield. not good enough still.
