Ha. I fired back at that buffoon (and make no mistake, he's a West Coast homer) on Twitter, and he cited poor reviews from the 2011 Final Four. Funny thing, since it's coming back in 2016 and drew these comments from top NCAA officials:

Let's hope it goes better than the NBA all star. Empty stadium, bad music.

Other than the weather (some clouds, rain and a bit of chill) I thought most media folks enjoyed when Houston hosted last

Most did, but the loudmouth whiners get the most attention. They also love to act as if they speak for everyone.

Houston is the not so good looking middle aged guy who pulls hot tail after they realize looks aren't everything. It takes a FAT WALLET.

the ASG is about festivities in the city which houston killed, not the actual game which corperate sponsers get the seats to.

the super bowl is about the game, the people that fill the seats are fans from other cities..

Even if folks didn't come from all over the country for every Superbowl no matter where it is at, football is big enough in Texas alone to fill Reliant many times over. Hell, just look at how packed and fantical Reliant is at Texans games.

Face it, NFL is king of american sports...people will always flock to see it.

The thing with the media is that most are very stubborn. They lock onto precedent and reputation, often because many try to craft their narratives beforehand. If they're cultured to believe City X is boring, it frames their whole experience.

Many of the complaints about Houston were valid... 20 years ago. Not today. The inner loop has exploded in terms of nightlife and entertainment options, many of which are walkable to each other. Discovery Green is an ideal outdoor venue to showcase Houston's usually great February weather, located right next to the George R. Brown (NFL Experience) and Toyota Center (you can bet Rockets will have at least one home game that weekend). It's also within blocks of the rail, which can take you right to Reliant.

Despite the "sprawl" stereotype, it's entirely possible to spend a great weekend in Houston without ever using a car (except for cab rides from the airport). Get a hotel in downtown or the Medical Center. Take the rail to George R. Brown during the day, hop down to Midtown to eat and go out later that night. Take the rail to museums and then to Reliant for the game.

It's actually a pretty awesome inner city. Unfortunately, most in the media have heard what it is from previous generations, and that image is instilled in their brains... and each time they visit, there's an issue of confirmation bias. It'll fade with time, but the new Houston hasn't been around long enough to change their perception.

P.S. The one thing I really don't understand is complaints over Reliant not being close to anything. Well, duh. It's a football stadium. Neither are the new ones in Dallas, New York, Phoenix or most other modern venues. The logistics of the enormous size combined with parking and traffic flow... it's asking for disaster if you combine that with a pre-existing business center. It's inside the loop, there are several hotels within walking distance and it's right on the rail line... that's about the best you can hope for.

When do Superbowl tickets go on sale? Is it 1 year in advance (2016), or will it be closer to the actual date?

Big difference. The Super Bowl means something and the ASG doesn't. Every seen a full stadium for a Pro-Bowl? Nope.

I don't think you will have any chance to buy one unless you go through the second hand market. Same as all star game.

:( I was hoping they would have a few thousand for sale to the public at the ticket office at Reliant. I definitely would have camped out for it.

I think the NFL has a ticket lottery of sorts but the odds of scoring tickets directly from them are next to impossible. can't hurt to fill out an application though when they come available. I think they usually start right after the previous years Super Bowl
