Texans have the Mr. Irrelevant pick. Am I the only one who actually cares about who gets picked in the 7th? I always root for the underdog.

I'm guessing we'll draft a punter with the last pick. Since we can't sign any undrafted free agents, we don't want to be competing with other teams for the best ones available if we lose Turk, so we'll play it safe (sounds familiar) and take one with our last pick.

To me, this speaks to the Texans being proactive in terms of looking to the future. Rookies don't all come in and immediately impact the current team. Especially when you talk about the later round guys, obviously.

Therefore, to say that "this team is not in need of a backup QB" indicates that you think they ARE in need of more defensive depth. At this point in the draft, the defensive depth would be for the future, not the present. So I would say if you're going for the future either way, then it's not about evaluating current needs as it is being able to look forward and make decisions about 2-3 years down the line. I think Yates satisfies that as well as a lot of guys would have, with the risk/reward ratio that seems good

People already bashing the pick. Check this out:

    "AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA!!!!!!!!!!

did anyone just catch the conference call with our new OT on ht.com?????

his mom grabbed the phone from him and told him she had another phone call coming in and made him tell the press he will have to talk to them at another time!

    NO LIE!!!"

"Wow if this is true we sure picked a winner...GJ Kubiak"

"i swear to god. the press guys just laughed. there was a huge ackward silence after he told them that!"

LOL. I guess people always have to b**** about something after what appears to be a solid draft.

ZOMG why are we drafting A QUARTERBACK when we should be using ALL 7 PICKS on DEFENSE!!!!

Anything 5th round and later is almost pure projects. The hit rate/longevity on these guys is pretty low, so it's not going to destroy a franchise if we miss. I'm ok with Yates...smart guy, knows our offense to a degree, and Orlovsky sucks and Leinart may be gone soon so we could use a backup to groom and not have to keep bringing in retread backups that don't work.

    Derek Newton
    Height:6'5"
    Weight:311 lbs.
    Arm Length:33 1/8 in.
    Hand Size:9 3/8 in.
    College:Arkansas State
    Conference:Sun Belt
    Position:OL

Newton has a nice frame and some growth potential. Uses his length to keep pass rushers away from his body. Can swallow up smaller defensive linemen. Keeps legs driving after contact in the running game. Displays good on-field awareness and the ability to combo block. Tough player.

Needs to add some size for the next level. Does not possess enough lateral mobility or quickness to deal with NFL speed rushers. Technique, hand placement, and pad level need improvement. Lacks balance and footwork in space. Had knee surgery following the 2010 season.

    NICE!

My boss started at QB for Rice a few years back and speaks pretty highly of Cheta. With our D, there's never been a better opportunity for Mr Irrelevant to make the team

The Tecans have surprised me with all the picks after Watt. Fantasic picks. Still not sold on Watt being nying but solid. I wanted a playmaker on D that could cause havoc going after the QB.

Can't complain about thte QB pick. Orlovsky sucks hulk wieners

While looking at Charmichael I found this and I love D.J's foot work in the pocket.
