    HOUSTON -
The Houston man arrested on terrorism charges pleaded not guilty to all counts against him after appearing in court Wednesday afternoon.

The defendant, prosecutors and defense attorneys were hastily called to court for a 1 p.m. detention hearing that ended up being rescheduled three hours later to 4 p.m.

Bond was denied for Omar Al Hardan, who faces three charges stemming from allegations that he lied to investigators on a citizenship application to try to go to Syria to fight for ISIS.

Federal agent testified that Al Hardan plotted to blow up the Galleria Mall and the old Sharpstown Mall, now known as PlazAmericas.

Agents also claimed that Al Hardan trained with an AK-47 on a farm outside Houston, learning how to fire, manipulate gun and how to move to cover and hide.

They also said they have Al Hardan's conversations where he said, "I want to blow myself up," and "I am against America."

An exhibit list made public Wednesday shows investigators seized items from Al Hardan’s apartment, including electronic components, electronic books and cellphones.

Federal prosecutors also noted on the evidence list that they had a photograph of tactical training, something the government says Al Hardan had previously received but lied about when questioned by government agents.

The exhibit list also indicated prosecutors had a photographs of the defendant taking an oath, of a circuit board, of the defendant’s closet and a “photograph —Firearm to child’s head.”

It was not noted in court documents, reviewed by Channel 2 Investigates, where the photograph came from, who took it or whether it belonged to Al Hardan.

Prosecutors could use the exhibits in the detention hearing as they ask a judge to hold Al Hardan in jail without bond while he awaits trial.

Al Hardan’s defense attorney, David Adler, said Wednesday that he plans to argue against the government’s request but said he had little more to comment on. Alder said he was added to the case Friday.

Al Hardan arrived at the federal courthouse in downtown Houston wearing a dark-colored jumpsuit and had his hands shackled to a chain around his waist.

Al Hardan entered the U.S. as a refugee from Iraq in 2009. If convicted, he faces up to 50 years in prison.

So where exactly does sharpstown start and end?

If you're on 59 S, is it from Hillcroft all the way past Bissy until beltway 8?

That entire area is trash. I happened to drive by it once and decided never again.

Forget where it starts or ends. Just avoid all of SW/Alief.

I think it's unfortunate that Southwest Houston gets such a bad rap and is so quickly dismissed. Of course, it's got its fair share of criminal activity, but there are very few places inside Houston city limits that don't. It's obviously evolved from the heyday of Sharpstown Mall in the 80s and early 90s, but in many ways, SW Houston is the essence of the melting pot of cultures that the city of Houston has come to stand for.

And surprise, if you use any sense or judgment, you can actually go there without getting robbed. You are not going to drive through SW Houston and find gang members patrolling the streets, not in the major thoroughfares anyway. You're not going to find drug houses or people openly smoking crack or weed in public view. What you will mostly find are working class people who are simply living their lives.

Best of all, you will find a cultural experience that cannot be duplicated in any part of Houston. You have the Mexican and Central American restaurants, tacquerias, and supermarkets in Sharpstown. You have the Hillcroft strip, which is lined with Indian, South Asian, and Middle Eastern restaurants and groceries, and sweet shops. You have Chinatown and Viet town on Bellaire, which is a one-stop shop for authentic Chinese or Vietnamese food, not to mention bubble tea, bakeries, karaoke, etc. And sprinkled in there are some very respectable dining options of other cultures, including Korean, Japanese, Filipino, Ethiopian, Malaysian, etc. The 4 and 5 star rated restaurants in this area on Yelp are too many to count: http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=food&find_loc=houston,+tx&start=0&l=p:TX:Houston::[Alief,Chinatown,Sharpstown,Westwood]

You can't name another area of Houston that can offer so much diversity in so few square miles. If ethnic experiences are not your thing, I certainly understand. But if you have any curiosity at all, don't let the outer appearance from the area from the freeway dissuade you from taking a look.

    ^^

The area that is really bad in SW Houston is that conglomeration of apartments at 59 and the beltway. I got lost there one time and it looked like folks were engaging in some shady behavior.
