http://keephoustonhouston.wordpress.com/2013/06/05/fake-names-its-gotta-stop/ I haven't heard of some of these, but I have heard a few people use Neartown before. EaDo sounds kind of ridiculous.
you can't win. Either the Gangs or the hippsters will take the upper hand in controlling the streets. word is bond.
In the two years I lived near Old Spanish Trail, I only heard that area referred to as Yellowstone once. And I was like WTF das a nashinull parc. I've heard Neartown before. I think that is there to stay. Never heard any of the others.
Neighborhoods come and go, and its all branding. But strong neighborhood brands really benefit the city.
As someone that grew up on a lot of Houston rap, Yellowstone was the only name I ever knew for that area.
I've been here 25+ years & I've never heard most of those names, either. Uptown I always thought was that Galleria area, and midtown was the area inside the loop, between the the galleria (uptown) and downtown. When people say they're going to midtown, they usually mean they're going to like Washington, or River Oaks.
I know Houston isn't the only city to do it. Austin has SoCo (South Congress) and San Fran has a few also, most notably SoMa (South of Market). EaDo just sounds so cheesy when referring to East Downtown.
League City will always be The LC (or just LC if you're in a hurry). As someone who grew up on a lot Scandinavian metal, the names of Houston neighborhoods never came up.
As someone who grew up on a lot of gangster polka, the only name that ever came up was the "bloody fifth."
STFU, the closest you've been to 5th Ward was on the 59 elevated over I-10 and the tracks while going to your spoiled rich neighborhoods.
