Without Athletes who makes your Houston Mount Rushmore? No requirements, just your favorite Houston people. I got: Marvin Zindler, Mattress Mack, Beyoncé, Milo Hamilton. Runner ups: Dominique Sasche, Tillman Fertitta , Bun B, Shawn Bermudez. Who you got?
You spelled his name wrong, and he's a Runner Up for your Mt Rushmore. Haven't you been in the GARM recently? Suffice it to say, you won't make the Mt Rushmore selection committee.
Nice list. You got Entrepeneur, Medicine (Medical Center), Politics and National Treasure/Celebrity all in one. I really want to work Ima Hogg in there, for the name alone. Seriously though, with how great the arts are in Houston comparatively to the rest of Texas, seems appropriate to get probably the #1 art patron in there. She gets bonus points for also being daughter of the first Texas-born Governor of Texas. woohoo.
Thanks. I figured arts patron I got covered by Jones. I was torn on the celebrity, I mean sure, Cronkite was America's News Source for many, many years, but Swayze did Point Break and Roadhouse. It was a tough call.
Mattress Mack The Undertaker Dr. Red Duke Howard Hughes Honorable mentions to Beyonce and whatever lady sung the Thunderbolt Transmission jingle
Rumor has it I lived in one of the Candy Man's abduction houses in the Heights at one point. My roommate worked as a journalist for Newsweek, and apparently she researched it and thought our house was haunted. Not sure how true.
You win this thread. OK, HP, here ya go (creepy story btw): Richard Linklater (or Wes Anderson, not sure) George H.W. Bush Michael Dell Billy Gibbons
I liked his son, the former mayor, as well. Buck mentioned Dr. Denton Cooley, a famous heart surgeon mentored by the even more famous Michael DeBakey, until they had a falling out. I talked to Dr. Cooley many times. He was my father's heart surgeon. Wes Anderson certainly deserves to be included. A great director, born in Houston, and more to the point, the director of Rushmore, an amazing flick filmed in parts of the city that were old stomping grounds for me. I would include Coach Guy Lewis. While not born in Houston (he was born in Arp, Texas), I think that being head coach of the Coogs for 3 decades, a team that produced more than one Hall of Famer and had multiple Final 4 appearances, certainly qualifies him for the summit. My father knew him socially. Dad got around.
Sam Houston (Namesake and leader) Judge Hofheinz (Modernized Houston Himself) Jesse H. Jones (Sole reason Houston became Energy Capitol of the World, Texas Commerce Bank, etc...) William Marsh Rice (bequeathed his entire fortune to create Rice Univ.) George Hermann (Philanthropist gave land/money to create Hermann Park, Memorial Hermann Hospitals,) LBJ (H-Town does not have a NASA Space Center with political pressure from Vice President and other Texas legislatures) Those dudes gotta be on the list.
