The day pass is coming back to Metro buses, at least for users of the bus system's automated fare card.

Riders, who lamented the loss of day passes five years ago, will be able to choose an extended day pass feature on Q cards later this year, according to a Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County news release. The day pass will cost $3.

"This is great news for our current patrons and an incentive for new ridership," Metro chairman Gilbert Garcia said.

The board on Thursday approved spending $175,000 to adjust software for the Q card system to allow for the day passes.

"We've been pushing for this as a board and will be delighted to offer the option to riders again soon," Garcia said.

When discussion of bringing back the day pass happened last month, riders said it was a no-brainer.

"I'd love to have a pass," said Roger Stevens, a frequent rider, in an email. "Sometimes I take three buses just to get where I am going."

No official date for the return has been set.

I have a Q Card, the article stated that it was Q Card holders. I don't see why this wouldn't apply to me

That would definitely be great. I'm just suspicious of metro. I have a feeling they could program park and ride bus q card machines differently. I hope I'm wrong.
