According to these criminologists, no that didn't happen: http://www.chron.com/news/houston-t...crime-wave-nonexistent-in-Houston-1715592.php. It seems like most things people know about Katrina aren't actually true. Their study says there was a small uptick in murder and robbery initially but no change in other crimes you might expect evacuees to affect -- burglary being one.
It's not surprising. A combination of no zoning laws (making it easy for people to hit up different parking lots and apartments in one night without going too far), a large population and city, and a diverse population (that make up a great city with a booming economy) all account for the car break-ins and other burglaries that make up this stat. Same here. How bout them Kings, Troll.
Beat me to it -- some percentage of those burglaries may be committed in hopes of acquiring a gun with which you can commit other crimes. Point taken on robberies vs. burglaries, excepting that there is a risk when burglarizing a home that somebody is indeed home or will come home when you're inside. Anyone got a similar list of where Houston ranks on robberies?
I just want to clarify to those mentioning guns, safety, etc... Burglary is different from robbery. but burglary is stealing when nobody is home.
Put a "I <3 My Chimpanze!" bumber sticker on your car and a "Beware of Chimp" sign on the fence. Problem solved. No one want's their face ripped off. No one.
After being robbed a few months ago, I've realized how pointless most locks and deadbolts are, and how burglar alarms can deter, but won't stop a crime. A dog can be shot, and by the time you've fed that sucker for years, he'll end up costing you a lot more than what you probably lose in a burglary anyway. lol. BTW, check out what's going on around your area - you may be shocked : http://www.spotcrime.com
Seriously? How are there so many burglars when so many Houston home owners have guns? Is there a statistic for cities with most burglars shot?
Most "suburban" burglaries happen in broad daylight when people aren't home or they're at work. Most people that own guns don't walk around with them loaded and ready to fire as they walk around the house, so it's usually the burglar that surprises them and not the other way around if it happens the homeowner is home. There have been a few cases where homeowners have shot and killed burglars, though (woo hoo!).
My property was burglarized this past year- I have no compassion for those worthless scum- wish I could catch them red handed I would take justice in my own hands middle east style
