I was just making a correction. Their best chance is to keep making themselves relevant in the big 2 sports and keep generating fan interest and crowds. This football hire is huge.
I was told they had a list but KK wasn’t at the top of the list. The logical conclusion for me is that they already worked down their list. However last night when I spoke to someone that gives a lot to the football program, they said it isn’t the case. That the first name on their list has and still is the WV coach and that it is a really strong likelihood they get him after his buyout decreases by 1.5 after the New Year. So it is one of those things where my gut tells me one thing and the people close say something completely different. If you are asking if they could end up with someone everyone will be disappointed with? My gut says yes but those very close to the program seem oddly confident. Remember this decision is basically being made by one man.
The Coogs firing Applewhite after going 8-5 may scare away some coaches. Let's face it, a big reason for the late season collapse was because the QB and Ed Oliver went down. If those two guys had remained healthy then the Coogs were likely to do much better. Would it be fair to fire MDA if Harden and CP3 both missed the second half of the season and the Rockets ended up with a terrible record. It seems like maybe Tilman and others were just waiting for a good excuse to dump Applewhite, and this is their chance. Not sure that helps to attract the top coaching prospects.
I don't think they'd have pulled the trigger on firing Applewhite if they weren't at least fairly confident in getting their guy. If you get your guy, this move shows that UH will not accept mediocrity and it's a powerful message to the country that will be a good thing. If you don't get your guy....that could be very bad.
What you are saying is true. I was told the plan was not to fire Applewhite until Tillman gave them no choice. If they bring in the coach from WV, I will be impressed. He has been solid as a small fry in the Big XII. Also, assuming he wins, he isn’t likely to jump ship.
Thing is take away Briles and we're probably a 5 win team at best. He's got no Ed Oliver in 2019 and who knows what King's recovery is gonna be like.
https://www.sbnation.com/college-fo...a-holgorsen-hired-houston-coach-west-virginia UH interviewed USC offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and Cal defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter in Los Angeles, sources said, but had long before then zeroed in on Holgorsen as the top candidate to follow Major Applewhite.
Makes zero sense to me from Holgorsen’s perspective but Tillman deserves a lot of credit. He took the bull by the horns, told the regents that Applewhite was done and that Holgorsen was going to be the coach... he worked his connections and is writing a huge check. This is huge for UH and Tillman.

It makes more sense than you might think. West Virginia is not in a hotbed for high school talent. I read last year only 4 kids in the entire state received FBS scholarships which means to win there you have to recruit mostly out of state. They are a long way from every other school in the Big XII. He loves Houston and can recruit with a lot less traveling than he has to do at West Virginia.
Hide your coeds. Hide your booze. Great hire for UH if true, and hopefully he can keep his **** together.
