Applewhite was the wrong decision from day one. Very few thought otherwise. Whew. Glad that is over.

We fire coaches for going 8-4.

Dana Holgorsen is an 8-4 coach (actually ~7.6 wins) in the BIg 12.

I want to like the potential hire but I'm not quite there yet.

From "why would he leave West Virginia to go there" to "we were looking to unload him anyway."

It doesn’t matter, Fertitta was only lukewarm for Applewhite from day 1. He has wanted Holgorsen since Herman left and will do everything he can to get him, including paying him an amount outside of the conference rate.

I know Holgorsen is buddies with Fertitta but I must admit this has the smell of Holgorsen snorting around for more money from his current employer.

When I asked a regent... I was told that Tillman will do what he wants on Applewhite’s future and any hires.

Yeah... he has done a good to very good job at West Virginia. He has a very tough job at West Virginia.

So, if you had to guess, do you think he's coming here or no?

(I saw Duarte in the Chronicle list Dana, Todd Orlando, Lane, Kliff & Neal Brown as possible candidates)

It makes no sense to me that he would come to Houston. He is making like 3.5 million at West Virginia. So if Tillman gives him 5 million; is that a big enough amount for him to move out of his new special built home and move his daughters? I would think West Virginia would offer him more before he left anyway.

Yes, I know Dana and Tillman are close, but if the relationship is so great, why didn’t Tillman get him instead of Applewhite two years ago?

My gut is he doesn’t go to UH, but the people at UH on the boards that know these things have left it up to Fertitta and he has left them with the impression that he can get Dana.

They know more than I do... but as an outside observer I can’t see him going to UH unless the relationship with West Virginia’s administration has really soured.

This clashes with what I was told, which was that Dana was always the top choice for Tillman.

Tillman and UH is running into the problem, that even with vastly improved facilities and financial support, top coaches are leery of going to a non-top 5 conference. Until something breaks and UH gets into a top conference, there will be some limitations.

It's has been the Coog life for sometime.

I thought Dana was rumored after the Herman exodus. Makesense to me. It will be hard to get a prove coach otherwise.

Dana was mentioned if Herman left in 2016, and for whatever reason nothing else came of it.

There is no way Holgerson is leaving power 5 for here, this (as Nook) said is him, leveraging for more money. It's tough being a Cougar, #ScrewAnnRichards

Looks like there will be a couple of years before we have a winning season.

Yep her personal interest as a state elected servant really helped her private school and put a state school forever behind the eightball. I'll piss on the Ann Richards bridge everytime I walk across it.

As far as Dana is concerned, Tillman knows if the trouble of going after Dana is worth pursuing. He is the real driving force behind all the growth. With Tillman's big money there isn't even a new TV on campus. The only way to get more revenue is to improve the results. UH is never going to be Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson. But they can challenge as one of the top non P5 most years if the right coach is in place. I think that is a better place to be than most schools.

Her involvement in that was minuscule, direct your ire at other state politicians.

There is really no reason to even discuss it at this point. It was a long time ago and she is long dead.

They need to get into a P-5 conference and they have a chance to do surprisingly well. The issue has been there is very limited expansion. They have a decent shot to end up in the PAC but there are no guarantees.

The idea of continuity was stupid to me. Being seen as a stepping stone was part of a long run of success, and he completely ignored it. Why break a talent pipeline that was actually working. But it's not too late. We could easily have a strong season next year on the field, and get this thing rolling again.
