IIRC his buyout was set at 2.25M on his original contract, with it decreasing after year 3. That guy must be looking at old info.
Don't conferences have a tendency to disband not long after UH joins them? Not good news for the Big XII.
His salary will be close to the top 30, and he also supposedly has very good bonus structures, including a guaranteed substantial raise if they join a P5 conference. It is close to what I expected, supposedly they were comfortable going over 3 million but Herman wanted it structured based on bonuses.
LOVE the stipulations regarding the practice facility. Herman seems like he has a good grasp on what steps must be taken to bring this program to a P5 conference AND remain competitive
To add to that, I think they were planning on honoring the bonuses currently in his contract with his new contract. Not sure if that's been confirmed now that he's signed, but under the terms of the initial contract he was to receive a base salary increase if the team won the AAC championship. The salary increase would boost him to about $3m.
You're stuck with Sumlin. Just sayin'. Anyway, I wrote a while back about how his goal isn't UT or USC. He's more ambitious than that. It's the NFL. He's REQUIRING UH to improve their facilities, even stipulating the construction timeline! HOW AWESOME IS THAT! Best believe he's gained MASSIVE respect around the county. He knows if he builds the program up, makes UH relevant to the CFB conversation, he'll attract the attention of the very best. Conventional thought was that he was holding out for more money. Nope. He was happy with the original salary offer. He was holding out to make sure his coaches were taken care of and for the facilities. Commitment. Integrity. Herman's a smart man, 5 legendary years at UH will get him to the NFL quicker than winning 8 or 9 games in a P5 for a few years. He's here to stay, guys. Strap in and buckle up. It's going to be a thrill.
Herman seems genuinely interested in improving the school and not just trying to get a big check for himself. Even if he ends up leaving in the next year or two we're still in a much better spot than we were when Sumlin left.
This is nothing but great news for UH but saying Herman is holding out for the NFL and that this is his best shot at doing so is just plain wrong. The last 4 college coaches to get the call were Chip Kelly, Pete Carroll, Jim Harbaugh, and Nick Saban. All 4 were championship caliber coaches at major P5 schools and only 1 of those have really succeeded. Not saying a non-P5 coach won't ever get the call but they will almost always look for guys who have won A LOT at the highest level possible.
love seeing the haters try to rain on our parade...this ain't the UH of the past....the motha*#(@*# cougars!
I have and Herman has done an exceptional job without a doubt. But need some explaining how he is a trailblazer...
