Kobe Bryant was once a Charlotte Hornet, for 13 days

At the time, Bryant was a 17-year-old prodigy, having decided to jump to the NBA after graduating from Lower Merion High near Philadelphia.

When the Charlotte Hornets made Bryant the 13th pick in the 1996 draft, a buzz rippled through the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J., where the event was held. It was an unexpected choice by a team that desperately needed a big man.

But Bryant was never going to be a Charlotte Hornet. The Hornets wanted Los Angeles Lakers center Vlade Divac, and to get him they agreed to draft Bryant and trade him for Divac.

Iono if its the best trade ever, but certainly one of the dumbest. Why you trade with a rival from the same state no less?

    Gotta love Scola.

I think he could do much more as far as scoring but he defers to other players. This year, unless there is a big trade , he will most likely be the 4th option, and he is better than that easily.

    Ultimate team player.

Maybe not even the Spurs worst trade ever, though. They GAVE Rodman (and three more rings) to the Bulls for Will Freaking Perdue and cash.

Kobe forced that trade. He wanted to be a Laker.

Rodman burned his bridges in SA and didn't help the Spurs win in the playoffs like they thought he would. The Spurs just wanted to get rid of him.

Are they serious? Best trade ever? Back in the 80's the Celtics traded 2 first round picks for Robert Parish and Kevin McHale. Those 2 first round picks they gave up became Joe Barry Carroll and Rickey Brown.

So you have arguably one of the top 3 PF's to ever play the game and a hall of fame center, both of whom were selected to the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History for ... Joe Barry Carroll and some dude.

So, you're saying Parish and McHale are better than Scola?

Yeah, I thought it was an interesting article to share given how Scola played today (and the big reaction from both Clutchfans and the Spurstalk forums). I don't work for a sports publication, and don't really care who the info comes from as long as it provides an interesting perspective or question based on facts.

I don't know if I think it was the best ever as I'm sure there are better trades throughout history that would beat it. (the Celtics trade Dr. Dunk mentioned would definitely blow this one away)

But I do wonder how the Scola trade ranks among the best in the past decade or in recent history?

How? Being in NC, I remember when this happened. How does a 17YO, thirteenth pick in the First Round force anything? Didn't Jerry West recognize the talent... that's what I read. Oh and Divac was the better player for about 3 years.

Another underrated aspect is that we also subtracted the biggest va-jay-jay ever to wear a Rockets uniform in that deal. Scola is 10x the player and a 1000x the teammate than Spanoulis was.

Kobe was going to Duke if he wasn't going to the Lakers.

Here is another article about Scola's play today, this one more about what people had to say about him and his game (Manu and Tiago and and some of Scola's own comments about the game).

I guess it really is International Scola Day :)

I never noticed it before, but there is something wrong with his hand... it looks like a porcelain doll hand.
