I have been mulling over home defense for a while now, and I have finally decided to invest in a handgun. This was of course after much debate with my wife. In light of recent events we both agreed it was a good time.

Any of you gun collectors out there have any suggestions on the most accurate, moderately priced guns out there? I have fired before and have experience with them, I just don't know everything about every model. My dad's has a Ruger p-95dc and it's nice.

    Any suggestions would be helpful...

I would suggest some sort of .22 revolver. There is no chance of jamming, it is not going to put huge holes in your wall when you shot at the robbers, and ammo is dirt cheap so you can take a lot of target practice for very little money. If you are worried that that will not have enough stopping power, then I would suggest a .357 magnum revolver. Jamming is still a non-issue, but there will be major holes in whatever you hit and you will have to drop a bit more cash for the ammo. Ruger makes a fairly good and cheap .22 revolver, I think.

Maufacturers is an important factor. Ruger is nice for handgun but imo Heckler and Koch is a great, safe choice in any model. Excellant quality. A bit more than say Smith and Wesson or Taurus , but worth it. I'd recommend 9 mm or .40 caliber...
You could go with a higher caliber such as .357 or .45 but the recoil is more and most people can handle the 9 or .40 caliber with better accuracy.

I've got a Ruger model GP100 357 magnum pistol. It's well balanced & very comfortable. I wouldn't recommend a 22 caliber because, while it'll eventually kill what you're shooting at, it won't drop 'em.

You might want to consider a 38 caliber or, as others have suggested a 9mm, since I'm assuming your wife will be taught to shoot it as well (if she doesn't already know how). The 38 or 9mm would be easier for her to handle & both will drop any intruders. The HK is a nice 9mm, but it's a little pricey. I'd recommend a Browning Hi Power 9mm, if you've got your heart set on a 9mm. If this is just for home defense, the 38 caliber revolver should be more than adequate & do less damage to the pocket book. Also, make sure that the gun fits her hand as well as your's. I've got relatively small hands my self & it does make a difference.

As far as ammo goes, I use a brand called Glaser Safety Slugs. The only place that I've seen these is at the gun shows, but Carter's Country should know about them. They actually have a #6 bird shot in the tip, which acts like a shotgun. When they hit their target, they explode in a shotgun pattern & cause severe internal damage. The benefit of this type is that the shell loses it's forward velocity once it makes contact with the target or a wall, unlike a hollow point bullet, which will keep traveling or richochet off of a bone & possibly hit someone that you didn't mean to. Hope this helps & I pray that you'll never have to use it.

Man, I guess clutch city is also a registered member of the NRA!?

I'm not sure if I'm Glad to see we have some gun toting experts or a little frightened that the same people that posts some of these messages are also carrying guns!

Thanks for all the info... what about a Baby Eagle 9mm or .40 compact?

EDITED POST-- My response was inappropriate. Nevertheless, this goes way over the line of decency. I hope you get run RM95.

I would vote for the a little frightened option. Keep this in mind next time one of the members on the board mentions having a get together.

Man I'm kind of uncomfortable with so many people having info on guns! ;) Seriously though, I doubt if you'll have to start packing heat because of the terrorist attacks. I doubt if it would be any help. Of course I'm not crazy about guns, so I assume you would know more about your situation then I would. If you get one, be careful! :)

No, picking on minorities because you're afraid of them is the mark of a stupid coward.

Besides, no one's a coward until DaDakota calls them one.

So I'm safe, DaDakota hasn't called me a coward. And I haven't picked on any minorities now or before... so I'm safe there.

RR -- "picking on" a man's wife usually means you like the person well enough to think it's not a big deal. Haven't you ever told someone a "your mama" joke?
