Being a big Oilers fan for a long time, this is great to see that he will become a Hall of Famer this saturday. Congrats to him.
He certainly put up some gaudy numbers. Most would say that it had a lot to do with the systems he played in, college and pro. He was definitely one of the biggest reasons for the Oilers resurgence in the late 80's and early 90's. Those Run-N-Shoot teams were a hell of a lot of fun to watch, in the regular season. It just never worked out in the playoffs. IIRC, he also holds the all-time record for QB fumbles.
i attribute the great offense to the ridiculous (in a good way) offensive line. that's the only way i can explain how such a scheme can work. their running game was mediocre at best and evidenced by the "most fumbled QB of all time" stat, he probably had the ball in his hands 80% of the time (yes, i know the QB always gets the snap. i was talking about making an actual play).
We had the Phoenix Suns of football. Unfortunately, just like the real Suns, we could never put it together to win a championship.
Wish we had Moon in his prime with the Texans. He never had a weapon even close to Andre, Moulds, or DD.
I remember we had a couple good receivers in All-star Drew Hill, electric-slide Ernest Givens, Haywood Jeffries who drops a catch everynow and then, and later we got Webster Slaughter...those were the days
Drew Hill? Ernest Givens? Haywood Jeffries? Gary Brown? Webster Slaughter? Lorenzo White? Not to mention 2 HOF'ers on the O-line (Munchak and Matthews). He had some great players around him.
famicon - you forgot sideline-highlight-man Curtis Duncan and speedy Tony Jones Too bad for Jeff Alm. GO MOON! I think I still have his autographed ticket. I will look for it.
absolutely. those teams were loaded with talent. i remember steve young saying a couple of years back that the oilers of the early 90's was the best team he had ever seen that never won a super bowl. i watched the 90 and 91 season notebooks for the oilers the other night on NFL Network. those teams, on both sides of the ball, were absolutely stacked.
I totally forgot about Curtis Duncan! I remember in Tecmo Bowl if you're playing the Pro Bowl, it was stacked with Oilers. Also had those Oiler pennants when I was younger: "Love Ya Blue" "Super Blue in '92" And then the Buffalo game happened.
I always thought Warren Moon was great. I was at a party once and he came into the place with his entourage. A bevy of beautiful women, and not a one of them was his wife.
and they went 12-4 the next season. and then the chiefs game happened. and then bud talked about maybe moving them. and then they went 2-14. and then they were lame duck.
Hey, Mad... then "the punch" happened... it was a Sunday Night game, no? Against the JEtties... no less...
I was at that game, but I had no idea what had happened until I got home and saw it on Sportscenter. No one in the Dome knew anything had happened. Don't forget Ladd Herzog mooning that wedding party. Or Baby-gate. Or Chuck Knoll DISSING Jerry Glanville after that NYE playoff game. Or Sam Wyche sticking it down our throat 61-7. Or being the only NFL team to outlaw tailgating. Thanks for the memories, Bud...
Man, some great years...And the great year he and in the CFL... Those were the days...I went to the last Oiler game in the Dome and although WM wasn't there, it did close a chapter of great times in the Dome...
