the hotel is the best thing do with it if they are going to keep it. a luxury hotel would help attract another super bowl, ncaa tourney, etc. Gut the inside and make it like the Gaylord place.
well, they need to at least clean it up, it looks terrible oh ya and the rodeo sucks, i wish they would cancel that
The problem that I have with the premise they are using in that quote is that it is true of EVERY possible thing they could do with the dome. If somebody redevelops it, it will be for them to make money. Any moneymaking venture would be taking funds that are not being spent at the rodeo. This is nuts.
It is...I said in the other thread, i'm pretty convinced now that this is about negotiation. The Texans and the Rodeo want something to make this project "go." Greasing the wheels, I guess. Otherwise, this is nonsensical.
Top Ten things you can do with the Astrodome (the eighth wonder of the world- 10. Make a reality show called Big Brother Astrodome 9. Make it the first indoor landfill 8. Open the Bum and Earl s BBQ Restaurant there 7. Convert it to the Jerry Jones Memorial Dallas Cowboy Museum (for Cowboy fans in Houston) 6. Give it to FEMA and make it the official Gulf Coast Hurricane Evacuee Shelter 5. Wait 50 more years and hold the Houston Renaissance Festival there 4. Just put the old scoreboard back in working order 3. Renovate it for a celebration party for when the next Houston Sport Franchise wins a championship 2. List it on ebay and the #1 thing to do with the Astrodome is- 1. Sell it to Lakewood Church
What's most interesting about this situation is that both the Texans and the Rodeo benefit most from the Dome just sitting there. They don't pay for upkeep on it, so it's not costing them anything. The Rodeo gets to use it free of charge every year for its after hours party hangout, so the Rodeo is making plenty of money off it. The last thing the Texans want is for the Dome to get demolished and turned into parking spaces, because they wouldn't be able to rape people on parking passes.
That means in 2015 it comes under the National Historic Preservation Act and will almost certainly be nominated for the National Register of Historic Places. (Just the fact that Earl played there makes it of historical importance.) So, if you're going to tear it down, better do it before 2015.
Tear it down, and build more parking!!!! Plus that would mean more room for excellent tailgating. Not to mention the fact that I want to buy some of the old seats to help finish out my home theater. Its going to be badass.....
I am in favor of tearing it down, but there is no way the Houston Sport's Association would use it for additional parking spaces. They would probably extend the convention building and maybe build a multi-level parking structure.
does reliant own the lot where Astroworld used to be? If they need more parking that can use that, they still have the ramp over 610 and can break out the old Astroworld trollys to bring people over. Are their any plans for that land?
I agree, but I don't blame the rodeo or the Texans. If I had a business on a piece of land, and owned some empty land right next door, sold it to you, but said int he contract you can't do a single thing on that piece of land without my approval, even if it means you never do anything, and you agree to that deal, don't get mad at me for protecting my interests, right? to the extent that i don't what the deals are, though, and that whatever provisions the Texans/Rodeo got, they got due to the unique nature of their business, especially following the Oilers leaving, it is disappointing.
Im praying its an open-aired shopping center with a nail salon, dry cleaner, subway, payless shoes, a bank, and the largest Wal-Mart on the planet. Houston desperately needs this!!!!!!!!!!!
it's just disingenuous to start doing it 14 months in. to all of a sudden go, "wait?? ya'll are talking about building a hotel there?? what????? well we don't want it!!" after it's been well-circulated and very public.
As long as the Texans keep screwing over Houston iconic places (Astroworld, Astrodome....) its gonna be cursed to be a bad football team. How freaking stupid are they, a hotel/casino brings people into houston and would bring outside money to the city to people who wanted to attend the football games/rodeo on top of profit sharing they would receive. Bob Mcnair is gonna be begging for more money in 10 years when the texans are still a bad team and loyal houstonians wake up and stop going to the games. Texans = 21st Century Oilers.
