Anas (god but that's hard to type), your "liberal" new friend justtxyank actually works within the insurance industry and had many insightful (and critical, negative) posts about Obama's handling of healthcare. I mean, just in case you care about facts, which looks very unlikely.

What's amusing (and sad) is to see an obamacare state like New York compared to a #notobamacare state like Ohio (as in the completely misleading thread launched by basso.)

I'm not a huge fan of Obamacare, but in my analysis it beats the completely untenable path we were taking with the status quo. As a republican friend of mine who runs a heart hospital said, he was being driven to ruin by all the uninsured emergency room visits who then couldn't pay a cent.

he, surprisingly, would like a single-payer system, and on this we agree.

Yes, I thought that was kind of a given. My employer pays an assload, I pay like $96 a month. It's only me on mine. When you put a family on it, the plan goes up quite a bit.

But thanks to Obama, a change will cometh this October.

I'm thinking I should quit my job and start mowing grass, build fences or something. Something where I don't have to pay taxes or report my income. I can get me some bad ass healthcare here pretty soon. We just need people who pay taxes to keep working.

Go for it Galt - nobody here really cares if you work or not - there simply won't be enough idiots like you who deprive us of your labors for it to make a squat of difference in the grand scheme. And anyway you're obviously lying anyway. You will simply pay the taxes, vent on a BBS, and continue going about your business. But if you weren't you'd be replaced, and somebody else woudl take your place buying mudflaps or whatever stupid crap you spend your money on. You can thank us for access to health care later.

The comparison between NY and Ohio isn't really fair. NY starts from a really high cost level which is why they potentially see reduction. It doesn't have much to do with the exchanges in all honesty.

It's like here in Texas. If you work at an engineering group of 30 or so that is mostly young to middle aged men with a few women, your rates are going to explode thanks to Obamacare. If you work at a school of 30 or so that is mostly young to middle aged women, your rates are going to either go up a small bit or go down significantly. (Depending on some additional internal factors)

More proof liberalism is a disease.

I will also thank you for the worst president in the history of the US, brought to us by the low information voters.

Liberalism is a disease? I'm simply calling you on your obviously bogus "threat" which isn't really very threatening.

Honestly do you think your crappy 80k job makes you a member of society's upper crust? You think you arrived wit' yo Dodge Stratus?

I guess that's how the Republican party dupes folks like yourself into voting for policies that make them worse off but greatly enrich the tiny 0.1% for whom you will never even have the privilege of wiping an ass. That is the epitome of low information.

Why would I bother discussing health care policy with a clown who makes pointless bombastic threats about giving up his 5 figure salary - that he believes makes hiim one of life's winners?

Just get on your can-am and scoot-scoot away from here:

Thanks much. How do you see this extreme Ohio news on its own then?

And thanks for keeping it level on this topic -- much appreciated.

Just like the Feb. 2012 Zimmerman thread, I told ya so.

I'll dig this one up after Obamacare is fully in place and it will be another "Told ya so."

Well the Texas market will see similar rate hikes on the individual, though I'm hoping it's not going to be quite as high. I don't really know the details of the Ohio market as I've never studied it.

The problem is the individual plans will no longer allow a member to take out benefits that they don't want to pay for. A 30 year old woman that can't have a baby will still be paying for maternity coverage. Technically a 30 year old man will too as now all policies must include maternity coverage regardless of gender or age.

Usually individual policies excluded maternity outright or in some markets let you buy it with a waiting period and a price increase.

I thought Obama was an uppity snob who wanted everyone to go to college?

What narrative is it this month?

How is the Law of Large Numbers affected when participation is mandatory? Usually, this law works in insurance because a disproportionate number of the participants are healthy going in and the unhealthy ones are kept out... so the group is skewed toward good health. This would seem to be a large looming problem. Any comment?

Isn't that exactly why the current system doesn't work?

Great point. If we could just figure out a way to exclude the sick from medical care, the costs would drop significantly!

    Yup

Current system doesnt work because insurance companies deny people coverage (and healthy people voluntarily choose not to have coverage) and then cost taxpayers and people who do have insurance by partaking in large numbers of uncompensated care via ERs.

So we have a choice. Either we dont let people without insurance get health care (so let ERs turn people away) or mandate universal coverage to get the sick people to start paying and get the healthy people that turn down coverage to start paying. And because there are so many healthy people out there that aren't getting coverage, it actually balances out the increase in sick people.

As an example, New York actually bans discrmination against people with pre-existing conditions but DOES NOT have an individual mandate. So in New York, they were enrolling unhealthy/sick people onto insurance but healthy people still weren't buying in. That was the reason why premiums were so high there. Now with the individual mandate, those free-loading healthy people are now buying insurance so the system is getting much much cheaper.

Also as an interesting note, New York is the model that Republicans were proposing. (Ban discrimination on pre-existing conditions, ban price discrimination, but don't have an individual mandate) And what do you know, unlike the ACA that policy would lead to insanely high premiums (as evidenced by New York)
