If anyone is a fan of Indie films and doesn't mind subtitles I definitely would recommend "City of God". I saw it yesterday and must say it was very good. For those who don't know, it's based on a true story of life in the Brizillian slums and the tragedies within. Sorry if this has already been discussed !
I'm not sure if this qualifies, but my wife and I saw The Dreamers" Saturday night. We liked it. Had I been filming it, I would have changed a couple of parts (anyone who's seen it can probably guess which ones), but I remember the time period and it captures a slice of it very well.
I saw this on Saturday and absolutely loved it. Such a great story and great cinematography and presentation. I definetly recommend this movie!
I have to agree with you on your statement. I think the movie is up for an Oscar for best screenplay adaptation. Not bad considering the movie is spoken in Portuguese. I also got a chance to watch Monster. I felt that the story telling was fairly simple. Charlize Theron's performance was brilliant in which I thought saved the film.
A great indie/foreign movie is "Lovers of the Arctic Circle" or "Los Amantes del CĂrculo Polar" (1998)... It's Spanish, but subtitled and is a great love story...I bought the VHS because it didn't come in DVD format...It comes on the IFC channel every once in a while...
I picked this as a better movie than most of the other Oscar nominees for best picture. Pieces of April was funny.
serial experiements of lain... its anime though. its good and very diffrent. it does leave a few things left unexplained. its hard to believe this came on t.v. in japan, i would have to assume that people over there are a bit higher level thinking.
Well, I think Disney bought it, but The Triplets of Bellville is great. Fantastic style, and really cool music, too. Plus, a Salvador Dali short precedes the film.
Triplets is pretty accessible, doesn't really need subtitles as there are only about ten lines of dialogue IIRC. The animator does seem to think Americans are very fat...
I saw "Cidade de Deus" (orginal title of City of God) last fall and yes I also found it great. Also the O/st is excellent. The Dreamers, I missed that one bought just finished the book on which the movie is based which is called the "holy innocents" written by Gilbert Adlair. Other indy-flics I recommend: Noi Albinoi - (islandic movie) Les invasiones barbares (canadien movie) Kukushka (won the San Francisco - peoples award) Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter .... and Spring (Korean movie) Yossi & Jagger (israelien movie - love story of the year between two soldiers) Twilight Samurai
Bowling For Columbine is an independent movie, right? I watched that on Sunday. It caught me a little off guard. Good documentary.
I am going to see "Fog of War", the documentary about Robert S. MacNamara, at the River Oaks early next week. I've been waiting for it to come to Houston for a while now. I love indy films, but I am a bigger documentary freak.
Terrible movie. It's like Amadeus without the quality and with creepyness. The guy would have sex with girls, and then his brother would hop in and he would watch. Terrible melodramatic acting as well.
Thank you.....I couldn't have asked for a more resounding endorsement. I bet rentals of this movie will reach an all time high tonight based on your words alone.
I watched Farinelli a long time ago and found the story extraordinarily uncompelling. If you want to watch a guy hopping in and out of bed with beautiful women, at least watch something good.
I'm writing one called "Killer Comics". It's about 4 comedians who rob a comedy club on New Years Eve. COMING SOON
