So it's actually two years extra team control right? Since he for sure would have opted out next year?
solid move to extend James for a year. The alternative was that he'd be seeking the extension next offseason, at which point the #'s would go even higher. And an extension next offseason would eat into next year's cap just as well I believe
For the first time, in a long time, I am happy that James thoroughly enjoys the night culture in Houston.

We basically get him for 1 additional year but have to spend 12 million more per year for the next 3 years in order to keep him. I'm not as excited as I was before. This isn't an extension....it's a renegotiation.

Great News (even better because I thought that restructuring and renegotiating player contracts wasn't allowed under the NBA CBA).
we extended him for one more year. One more year is extremely important. It lifts the pressure of win now or Harden leaves.
Considering that Harden's been one of the best values in the league for a real superstar the past 2-3 years (only Curry's 11M/year is better) and I don't mind him getting big money a little sooner than originally planned. Harden is a top 5 player and has been paid as much a role player the past two years. Our franchise rest on Harden, might as while make him happy lol
Exactly this. The Rockets are smart enough not to risk team chemistry by Harden being (relatively) underpaid. This sort of thing has torpedoed good teams before, like with Shawn Kemp and Jim McIlvaine in the 90s.
Hardens heart pumps koolaid and he has already shown that. Looks like 4 more years of watching my Rockets. Its really sad, harden is the first houston sports figure that i absloutely cant stomache to watch. Ive been watching the rockets for a long time, but as long as he is here, i wont support that team. Looks like the only decent time of year now is football season.
If I'm counting correctly, he'll be a ten yr vet leading into the PO year of this new contract. Thus, he opts out to get the 10yr vet max, and more guaranteed years. Doesn't mean he'll opt out to leave POs for franchise players are more about injury insurance years, whereby without injury they are best served by renegotiating sooner, like here because of the 10yr Max increase
